Boring All-Star shenanigans are over. Time to for the stretch run!

Currently sitting 4th in the Metro Division, but it's its usual yearly logjam. 5 points behind the Islanders (?!?), but with one less game played. Only 2 points behind the Caps, but with 2 less games played. And we're 1 point behind the BJs with the same number of games played.

So those 4 teams are pretty much neck and neck right now and all have a shot to be win the division.

Time to get serious.

This is interesting:

The pick that Dallas sent to Pittsburgh was actually Minnesota's 4th RD pick. The same pick Pittsburgh sent Dallas back on Dec 19th when the #Penguins acquired Oleksiak.

It's as if the initial trade between the two clubs never happened.

That’s wild.

So does this mean Schultz is close? And what do we do with JJ?

JJ is going to stay right where he is, being paired with whomever keeps him from doing the most damage. Right now, that appears to be Pettersson. Sully has a track record of trying as many combinations as possible throughout the regular season, so I wouldn't be shocked to see that changed around as the season goes along.

We're not trading him anywhere with that anchor of a contract attached to him. At least, not without throwing in something else that's actually useful and I'm not sure we'd see a lot of benefit to doing it at that point.

Schultz has been skating, and I think he practiced in a no contact jersey prior to the break. As far as I know, his timetable is still mid-February. JJ is probably staying on the 3rd line with Petterson, and Schultz will slide into the 2nd pairing with Maatta. Riikola becomes the 7th defender.

Back to the Oleksiak trade - I believe this frees up ~$2.1m, which will definitely help at the deadline.

If my googles are to be believed, that gives us $7.4M in cap space as of right now.

We can definitely work with that.

I believe Schultz eats $5.5m of that when he returns.

Still, if the Pens dump Brassard at $3m, then they have just under $5m in space at the deadline. That's plenty of room to bring in a quality player.

Good call. We sign an impact guy and move Brassard I like where we will be at. Just need Geno back.

Pretty much.
That JJ contract is the gift that keeps on giving...

If I were constructing the team I'd base a Brassard (plus other things) for Martinez or Muzzin in LA.

We fix this defense, we fix a TON of the high danger chances against. Then Maybe one of the forwards will actually get a pass near their stick in the neutral zone on the breakout for once

Deal with the 3C issue by committee or trade for a lower level 3C. Plus we still have Cullen and Sheahan as experienced guys. Heck Simon has played C previously overseas and they have Blueger in the AHL.

Horny is healthy and back on the ice.
Taylor Hall is out and that is good because he has killed the Pens with his cherry picking ability the last two seasons.

Damn I thought Kessel missed the net on that PP chance but it was a nice play by the Devil defender

Alright Brass nets one.
I don't think anyone has looked good for the Pens so far. Legs aren't there.
That TO by Malkin on the third Devils goal can't happen. At least he was hard on the puck after that but Kessel was asleep guarding Boyle and the pass.

Oh, Murray has been ordinary tonight.

11 of them this year which is a ridiculous total to surrender at the all star break if not for a whole year.

When is the last time JJ hit the net with a shot from the point? Early November?

What a shit show.

That fourth goal, everyone on the ice sucked huge balls.

4 PP's, a team missing its best player who was the league MVP last year and a banged up squad and this is the best the Pens can give us?

Pens look like dogshit against a bad team. And they don’t even have Tanner Hall tonight.
