There are a lot more than I realized. When you consider what Colbert said in his press conference about possibly cutting players and adding free agents, I will fall out of my chair if we don't bring someone in this offseason.

My favorites:
1) Avery Williamson
2) Demarrio Davis
3) Preston Brown
4) Zach Brown
5) Navorro Bowman

I can't recall the last time Colbert went into a draft without at least patching a glaring need with one free agent signing to avoid picking from desperation.

Quote:
Nigel Bradham (28), Eagles
He has developed into a quality three-down contributor with some playmaking prowess, both in run and pass D.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FREE AGENTS

Tahir Whitehead (27), Lions
He can be very disruptive when pinning his ears back and pursuing the ball—needs to be a piece in a linebacking unit, not its headliner.

Avery Williamson (26), Titans
He rarely came off the field in Tennessee thanks to his gap-soundness in run D and serviceability against the pass.

NaVorro Bowman (29), Raiders
It’s hard to imagine the Raiders not making a strong run at re-signing him given the way he saved their decrepit linebacking corps last year. It is, however, a new coaching staff there…

Zach Brown (28), Washington
His pursuit speed is excellent, but he’s not immune to misreads.

Paul Posluszny (33), Jaguars
He doesn’t run like he used to, but is so smart and fundamentally sound (flawless?) that it often doesn’t matter.

Todd Davis (25), Broncos
He’s higher on this list because he’s so stingy against the run, but his vulnerability in coverage could leave him with less money than guys below him (like Hitchens, Pierre-Louis and maybe even Bynes).

Anthony Hitchens (25), Cowboys
The talent is evident, but he couldn’t secure an every-down role last season. Why?

Preston Brown (25), Bills
Average in every sense of the word.

Demario Davis (29), Jets
He’s too young to be washing up, but where was he down the stretch?

Karlos Dansby (36), Cardinals
One of those guys who does everything right, which makes coaches comfortable. That’s why he’ll always crack the starting lineup if he’s on the roster.

Kevin Pierre-Louis (26), Chiefs
Kansas City’s defense at times looked better when he rotated in for an aging Derrick Johnson.

Jon Bostic (26), Colts
He’s by no means dynamic, but has developed good awareness in zone coverage.

Josh Bynes (28), Lions
Multiple times for the Lions and Cardinals he did a stellar job as a fill-in first-teamer. He’s worth considering as a passing-down specialist.

Will Compton (28), Washington
A few times he’s earned playing time ahead of more talented players. He’s worth signing as a source of quality depth.

Christian Jones (27), Bears
Most of his snaps have come as a passing-down specialist. Given how much nickel teams play these days, could he garner low-end starter money?

Devon Kennard (26), Giants
Brings value as a strong-side ’backer who can get physical with tight ends off the snap.

Potential Cap Casualties (in alphabetical order): Ray-Ray Armstrong (49ers), Jerrell Freeman (Bears), David Harris (Patriots), Derrick Johnson (Chiefs), Vincent Rey (Bengals)

I have a strong feeling that Avery Williamson is going to be way to expensive. He's probably going to get $9-10 mill a year. Not sure we can swing that - unless we get full cap relief from Shazier. Then maybe.

They could always structure the deal in a way that they work around the one time pill of the $8.7M they carry for Shazier this year. Many of these large deals are $10M a year but with a $2M initial cap hit because of the bonus money.

Posluszny would be a good signing to pair with a draft pick.

My money is on Tahir Whitehead.

Young? Check.

More or less bargain bin? Check?

Good in coverage? Check.

Played for Detroit? Check.

And, he's an ascending player. Started off as a special teams stud, then spot player, then mediocre starter, then top 5-6 ILB in the NFL last year.

I just assumed he would be Colbert's top target after I read this.

I agree with all of this. Still going to cost $8+ mill per. I hope they spend it though, because he's probably as close as they're going to get to replacing what Shazier did for us without starting over with a rookie and then waiting a few years for him to develop. The time is now.

No way Whitehead makes $8M per. I'd be shocked... and I like the guy.

list of ILBs making $8M: Luke Kuechly, Bobby Wagner, Alec Ogletree, Mark Barron, Brian Cushing, Brandon Marshall.

You just got done saying..."he was a top 5-6 ILB in the NFL last year", but now you think it's crazy to assume he'll get paid like one. Burfict, Sean Lee and Telvin Smith make a buttload too.

One year and lots of flaws. He's a stopgap starter until proven otherwise.

Barron and Alec Ogletree were DC Wade Phillips' inside linebackers this past season, forming an undersized, but athletic, duo on the interior. The Rams were 22nd in run-defense DVOA and 28th in rush yards allowed, it's possible a change is made there. Barron carries a $10 million cap number for 2018, and the Rams can save $7 million by cutting him. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7497/mark-barron
Wouldn't this be interesting?

Two terrible, overpaid players-- one of whom is playing out of position because he couldn't cut it as a safety-- is one reason the Rams were so bad vs the run.

You obviously don't believe Barron is a prospect for the Steelers SS/ILB role? Davis over the top at FS? I know Barron would want $$ and think he's out of their league financially, Wow..., ok.

I would take Barron as a dime LB... but that's a lot of money for that role. I don't buy Barron as a starting 3-4 ILB, though. You think that's crazy?

Nope. I think he's best suited in a 4-3. I agree about the money it would likely take. Wishful thinking I guess.

Not the Steelers. They always pay more because they are stingy with the signing bonus (why is a mystery, considering they often restructure guys the following year, anyway).

So if you're talking a 5yr deal with a $25M SB, right there is $5M in prorated cap a year. Then the min base salary to go with it is @ $1M. So hard to get much lower than $6M, and that's with like a $15M cap hit the following year.

This is about ILB, but I see Marcus Peters could be on the market....I'm sure he'd be a model citizen at Club Dumblin.

If I knew in advance that Peters would masturbate onto the American flag live on facebook during a postgame locker room speech, I would still consider doing the deal.

I saw that yesterday. I think it was florio who pinned what if. If [huge if] the chefs decide to trade Peters it won't be cheap. They traded Smiff to skins and got in return an 18 3rd RND pick and Kendall Fuller. The speculation was Fuller in the slot after picking up David Amerson from the Raiders to play on the outside. I don't know why they would want to trade Peters unless he has issue with staff? If I'm kansashitty I keep Peters. Tough secondary IMHO.
