Steelers signed...
Phazahn Odom, Fordham, 6'7 251

http://www.nfldraftdiamonds.com/2017-nf ... e-fordham/

Quote:
6’7/6 251 pounds at his Pro Day. There, he ran a respectable 4.79 and jumped 33 inches in the vertical, plus a 7.27 three cone.

With a name like Phazahn, how can anything but success follow?

A B2B Directional Stater... http://steelerfurypodcast.com/b2b-direc ... prospects/

Quote:
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS All-state basketball player in high school who averaged 19 points and 14 rebounds per game. Arms unfurl for days and check in right at 36 inches. Has the length to extend well beyond his frame and rescue throws well out in front of him on crossing routes. Plays with long, flexible strides as an open field runner after the catch. Possesses unique ability to hurdle over tacklers who try and go low. Long arms give defensive backs trouble when he's able to latch onto them as a blocker in space.
WEAKNESSES Passive blocker who shies away from the big collision when asked to come across formation and wham defensive ends. Will need substantial weight work to upgrade his play strength. Doesn't have the strength or ability to be an in-line blocking option. Can be easily rerouted by force. Is a little plodding into his routes and plays way too tall creating extended gear down before opening. Slaps at football rather than snatches it as a pass catcher.
DRAFT PROJECTION PFA
BOTTOM LINE Tall and exceptionally long, Odom has the length and athletic ability that will likely intrigue some teams. However, his lack of playing strength shows up in his routes and in his blocking. He may not have pass-catching or blocking strengths to make it in the league. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/ ... id=2558831

Heard about this last night.

All I asked of the Steelers organization was to bring in Robert Tonyan, Derrick Griffin, or Phazahn Odom and give them a shot. He's not signed, but it's promising that they're giving him a look.

Btw, I hand timed him at 4.6 and change-- not sure why the "official" pro day time was so much slower. He looks faster than the pro day time on tape. I also think Zeirlekn's criticism about blocking willingness is off base. He laid that wham beautifully and with regularity in their offense... although they were primarily a passing offense-- good QB.

Fordham had a pretty good offensive minded head coach a couple years ago. He's doing ok now as OC in the Big Ten 8-)

If you look around you can find a decent amount of video for Odom.

He is a very willing blocker...That can't be said for all players

He also lined up inline a ton.

He adds an element to the team

I'm not sure I'd say he's willing. His attempts at blocking are half-hearted in most of the film I saw. He does "just enough" to screen off his guy. A couple terrible drops vs Navy and Army were not pleasant to watch either. His hands look suspect. No doubt he can run though and his height is a factor.

Like a lot of long armed guys, struggles at times to catch easy throws right at his torso-- if you think about it, long arms actually work against you there. He's got pretty good hands on balls he has to high-point or catch away from his body. We shall see.

that would be an at best scenario, not at worst. Why would you think a guy who they didn't even think enough to sign to a contract (nor did any other team) is a lock for any roster spot?

I said PS type as in practice squad not roster spot.. TE on the 53 is pretty much set at Green DJ X JJ,

IF (and it's a series of BIG IFs)... Ladarius Green cannot be cleared to play, and IF Odom has a big showing in minicamp and IF he gets signed and IF his good showing continues through camp... he has an outside shot at the roster.

The main reason he did not get signed yet is:
1. poor competition level
2. no school football program reputation
3. poor 40 time reported from pro day that not many saw in person

Maybe they just need to see him in person to know whether or not he has promise.

Personally, I think they roll with Green and Odom gets signed and makes the practice squad.

If if's and but's were candy and nuts we'd all have a Merry Fucking Christmas.

i consider the practice squad a roster spot. If Odom makes the PS, that would be considered a major surprise and accomplishment. He's an unsigned camp invite. Most likely camp fodder.

Really ? There are 10 PS spots if they keep 1 TE Orndorff is his main competition and they very well could keep 2

I have the PS looking like this

WR Ayers
CB S Allen
CB S Dixon
S Hagen
ILB Kelsey
TE Odom
OLB Blount
OL
OL
RB

I think its a longshot that Allen Dixon Hagen Ayers all clear waivers as well
