Boxing is seeing a resurgence. Safe to say it's not out of the woods yet, but it can breathe on its own.

Mayweather in a decision but I hope he gets knocked out.

This fight would've been a Phoenix for boxing if it happens 3-4 years ago. Floyd has a GD mouthpiece made out of $100 bills, literally. http://m.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sp ... -1.2174901
He's all about promoting his brand, & he knew taking this fight then would've hurt the image. His reaction speed is still off the charts though.

Hope Manny wins, can't see it at this point...going Mayweather in a decision.

Don't think the fight would have been any bigger hype publicity or financially 3-4 years ago.

With boxing coming back to basic cable (pbc) with some legit fights, boxing is clawing its way back. Still has a lot of problems limiting the sport from ever reaching its old heights.

EVERYONE wanted this fight then. Yeah it still has hype, but these guys were exiting their prime 2 years ago. I'm just saying it would've been that much better in 2012 & a fight that would've featured both in their absolute prime. Mayflower is smart by kicking the can...gives him a better shot at a win. Robbed the fans of a true stud vs. Stud battle.

This is Rocky 2 vs Rocky 1.

I'm typing without watching...talking strictly promo value.

The fight itself would have been better, but don't know how it would have sold more. Just about Everyone who wanted it then bought it now.

Expect a rematch. Fight wasn't good enough to call for one, but how do you not do it on your last fight? No one is going to buy Mayweather vs Khan or Cotto after this fight.

because I feel like the outcome was skewed due to the wait. Mayweather has the advantage at this point imo. Spend less energy in a fight likely going to cards playing his style, at their age, thats significant.

Not saying it wasn't good...just that it could've been so much better. There's virtually no chance of a part 3 here.

I think Khan would have been a better fight. Pac looked SLOW

Pacquiao and Roach should be ashamed of themselves for this fight. Floyd did nothing different last night than he always does and somehow it looked like Pac/Roach had no clue WTF was going on. Canelo did the same shit......Puncher/Brawler gets his fight with Floyd and then all of a sudden wants to become a boxer and out-box Floyd. Pacquiao HAD HAD HAD HAD to be more active last night and it looked like the first 4 rounders he was actually trying to counter-punch him. He wasn't nearly active enough and took no risks. He could have won the fight if he was more active and threw volume punches. Floyd isn't going to knock him out so I don't understand the lack of risk taking. \\

But in a fight where the punch output is similar there's no way you're winning a decision against Floyd.

Everyone will rake Floyd over the coals for last night being a boring fight but I know where the real blame lies.

Khan is the one person mayweather might knock out. And after this? Mayweather khan would probably drsw 500-600k buys.

The good news is that as mayweather heads toward retirement there are a lot of good fights to be made in middleweight. Focus should shift there. Ward GGG cotto Alvarez quillin

It reminded me why I gave up on watching that stuff.
That was terrible.

Capt Kirk vs the Lizard Capt was a better fight.
I streamed it for free. I feel like they owe me money
waste of time

Don't know why some were expecting Rocky 7. Floyd's a defensive fighter, one of the best. What he's done to bring him to 47-0 going into the fight wasn't going to change all of a sudden. Pacman couldn't do anything with him

Watching that kind of boxing to me is like watching defensive trap hockey. Yeah it works and is successful but it's unwatchable to me. They've been showing a bunch of Mayweahter fights on HBO leading up to this and I think I was able to stomach about 5 minutes total.

Great Capt Kirk/lizard fight analogy. That was a great match up. :D

One of boxings biggest problems is having a fighter with FMjr's style it's best gate and alleged P for P.

I hate him, it's smart, but he's never going to exchange, hell he is rarely willing to risk stepping forward...even his jab is off his heels or on the move. FMjr has taken fewer head shots in the last 10 years then most NFL RBs take in two games.

Part of the problem with Paq last night was the Nev commission ruled he couldn't use the anti inflammatory he was using to prepare for the fight...after previously ruling that he could. He injured a shoulder in camp a month ago...and this fight likely doesn't go off as scheduled if he was told the truth prior to just before the fight. That might well explain why he blew the last few rounds.

I want GGG to moved down and whip his ass so fucking bad...

Mayweather is a smart fighter but this fight illustrates why boxing is inferior to MMA. When Mayweather was dodging and covering up, Manny would have had about 20 good options under MMA rules.

There are five weapons in boxing. Jab, cross, front foot hook, and two uppercuts. There are maybe 200-300 in MMA.

Boxing is checkers, MMA is chess. Boxing is three chord blues, MMA is jazz. Boxing is Grand Theft Auto, MMA is Portal 2.

I am old school on many things, but the newer generation has it right on this subject. Boxing is a relic from a past when the strategy of fighting was poorly understood.

Fighting has evolved more in the last 20 years than in the last 2000 and the sporting world needs to adapt.

I've got to look up Portal 2...

I don't entirely disagree with what you are saying but...

Boxing isn't fighting, it's boxing. No doubt a highly trained MMA fighter has the advantage in a street fight, that's not debatable, but...

There was more action in Mattysse vs Provodnikov then in this entire years worth of UFC offerings.

And the UFC is a joke compared to what it was intended to be. The premature stoppages are ridiculous. Rhonda Rousey is ridiculous. They should bill themselves as MMA and not "fighting" because this is nothing like it was intended...the rounds, the limitations on striking, ban on headbutting, north south elbows, small joint manipulation, grounded knees, and the idea that the fighters should ever be stood up, rounds, and referee stoppage make it nothing like Vale Tudo or real fighting...although I think even Vale Tudo has now adopted much of the UFV format.

Portal 2? I hardly ever play video games and think most are a waste of time. However Portal 2 is amazing. It's must play even if you think video games are stupid.

In a street fight, a Krav Maga black belt or Kuk Sool black belt would beat any MMA or boxer because there are no rules. Street fighting is a whole different animal.

Small joint manipulation and some of those other things you mentioned should be banned for obvious reasons. MMA is smart enough to know it can't maintain a mainstream audience without rules to curb gruesome or career ending injuries.

Rousey should just go the Dwayne Johnson route at this point in her career.

Actually what you outlined is precisely why I prefer boxing to mma. Everyone in boxing has the same toolset and limitations. Mma by comparison is Rock Paper Scissors where martial arts field of specialization matters as much as your skill. I'd rather it be purely about skill.

That may have been partially true in 1993 when everyone was surprised by Royce Gracie's chokehold but now everyone knows the various disciplines. You have to or you will get killed.

Arguing that the skill set involved in boxing is more complex than MMA simply flies in the face of simple observation. MMA fighters are good at dozens of skills. There's only so many ways to throw a jab.

The rock paper scissors comparison is idiotic. If you knew three moves in MMA you'd last in the ring against a club fighter about ten seconds.

Please get back to us after you spend a couple of sessions at an MMA gym and have some idea what you are talking about.

You compared MMA to rock paper scissors and yet claim to have superior intellect. Like most internet tough guys.

You like boxing because it got to you first. It got to me first too, but I recognize the skill superiority of MMA fighters. Saying MMA is less skilled is ignoring reality and shaking fists at clouds. I'm not wired by inertia, but by observation of data.

This is a pretty decent discussion...one that I debate with friends and family on occasion so I hope we can keep the personalized bs out of it. I've been as bad as anyone, but I'm doing my best to not violate the rules in spirit by being so critical and nasty in the terms I use to disagree or attack the posters point that I'm for all intents and purposes calling them dumb or lazy.

Not to put words in anyones mouth I think Knife is speaking to the chaos and match up problems the UFC has with his rock paper scissors and tool sets comments. For example, consider Werdum before he vastly improved his striking. He could likely beat every fighter that specialized in wrestling or BJJ...yet get humilated and pounded out by a second tier striker like Overeem.

What I was getting at with Vale Tudo and the UFC's billing itself as fighting rather then MMA is it is nothing like a fight anymore. The original rules were simple...no weight classes, no stoppages, no referee intervention of any sort unless there was a tap until the hour time limit expired. The round system, the rules changes, and referee intervention has really hurt those with a wrestling background and to a lesser degree the BJJ guys. Imo, if they simply eliminated the referees discretion on stand up and legalized head butts elite wrestlers would again dominate.
