At PNC Park
Game time: 4:05PM ET
Probable starters:
PHI: Vince Velasquez (2-3, 5.63 ERA)
PIT: Ivan Nova (3-3, 2.48 ERA)

Quote:
Pirates right-hander Ivan Nova hasn't had any issues pitching deep into games this season, but it's a different story for the Phillies' Vince Velasquez. The two pitchers will square off in the second of three games between the clubs on Saturday at PNC Park.

Nova has pitched at least six innings in all eight of his starts, including two complete games and a 4-0 shutout win over the Marlins on April 29, while Velasquez has only made it through six innings in three of his seven starts. Through seven starts this season, Velasquez is 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA.

The Phillies are hoping to get more innings from their hard-throwing right-hander, as their bullpen has the fourth-worst ERA in the National League. In his last start, Velasquez threw 100 pitches in only five innings in a 6-5 loss to the Nationals.

After a sizzling April that saw Nova register a 1.50 ERA in his first five starts, he has a 4.42 ERA in three May starts and is yet to register a win this month.

Nova's start at PNC Park will be his first at home since April 23. His last four outings have all been on the road.

Three things to know about this game

• Adam Frazier is expected to return to the Pirates' lineup Saturday after taking a scheduled off-day on Friday. The utility man has provided a boost to their lineup since being reinstated from the disabled list on May 12. In his last four games, Frazier is 10-for-20 with five RBIs, four of which came against the Nationals on Thursday.

• The Phillies bullpen's struggles have worsened during their current nine-game road trip. The bullpen has allowed 35 earned runs in 52 2/3 innings in their first six games of the trip.

• Velasquez and Nova aren't quite polar opposites, but they certainly have different approaches and strengths. Velasquez ranks in the top 30 among qualified pitchers in both strikeout and walk rates, getting one outcome or the other in 34.3 percent of his plate appearances. Meanwhile, Nova has the 11th-lowest strikeout rate and lowest walk rate, a combined 17.3 percent.

Out of 130 pitchers with at least 500 pitches thrown this season, Velasquez and Nova are about as far apart as it gets in terms of the percentage of their pitches put in play (Nova is first with a 24.4 percent rate and Velazquez is 113th with 15.9) and the percentage of pitches thrown in deep counts (three balls and/or two strikes -- Nova is second lowest at 26.6 percent and Velasquez is 21st-highest at 34.4).
