At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
WAS: Jacob Turner (2-1, 3.31 ERA)
PIT: Gerrit Cole (1-4, 3.06 ERA)

Quote:
Since a poor Opening Day outing in Boston against the Red Sox, Gerrit Cole has compiled a 2.40 ERA with 45 strikeouts and nine walks in seven starts. Yet all that good work produced a mere 1-3 record for the Pittsburgh Pirates' big right-hander.

Cole, 1-4 overall with a 3.06 ERA heading into Wednesday's game against Washington at PNC Park, has battled not only hostile hitters this season but a lack of offense. He ranks second in lowest run support among National League starters with 2.5 runs per game. Outwardly, at least, he doesn't appear fazed.

"We go through spurts like this, I feel like, every year," Cole said after a 2-1 loss to Zack Greinke and the Arizona Diamondbacks in his previous start Thursday, a game in which he yielded two earned runs in seven innings, striking out five and walking one, "It's not the time -- it's never the time to get frustrated."

Cole, who has pitched at least six innings in every start except the opener, is 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in his two career starts against the Nationals at PNC Park.

Right-hander Jacob Turner gets the nod for the Nationals. In seven appearances, including one start, spanning 16 1/3 innings, Turner is 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA. The only time he has faced the Pirates was in 2014 while pitching for the Chicago Cubs. Turner gave up seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings during a loss.

Three things to know about this game

• Last season, when he walked 7.1 percent of the hitters he faced, Cole's 60.1-percent first-pitch strike rate ranked 89th in Major League Baseball (minimum 400 batters faced), according to Statcast. This year, Cole's walk rate is down to a career-low 5 percent, in part because of a first-pitch strike rate of 67.7 percent that is tied for fifth (minimum 150 batters faced.)

• Cole has allowed just one home run to a current Nationals hitter, Michael A. Taylor. Overall, the Nats have hit .236/.300/.309 in 62 career plate appearances against Cole. Bryce Harper, the first overall Draft pick a year before Cole, is 3-for-8 with two strikeouts and no extra-base hits against Cole.

• Monday was the only off-day for the Pirates during May. The club played 17 games in 17 days through Sunday, going 7-10, and began a string of 16 straight games Tuesday against Washington.
