At Chase Field
Game time: 4:10PM ET
Probable starters:
PIT: Ivan Nova (3-3, 2.23 ERA)
ARI: Robbie Ray (2-3, 4.14 ERA)

Quote:
Ivan Nova has done his part this season, but the Pirates haven't done much to help him. The veteran right-hander will take the mound at Chase Field on Sunday afternoon with a 2.23 ERA, but Pittsburgh has won only three times with him on the mound.

Nova will start the Mother's Day matchup against D-backs lefty Robbie Ray in the finale of a four-game series. Arizona won the first two meetings, with the Pirates holding on Saturday night for a 4-3 victory to end a six-game slide.

The Pirates have averaged just 2.71 runs in Nova's starts, the third-lowest total in the National League behind Gerrit Cole (2.50) and the Giants' Jeff Samardzija (2.57).

"This guy has gone out since he touched the ball here the first time with intent, with purpose, with execution and followed through," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Nova, who has pitched at least six innings in each of his seven starts this season. "He's been a guy to give the bullpen rest when they needed it. He's given us big games when we've needed them. He's given us opportunities to win. That's what you're looking for."

Ray is coming off a loss to the Tigers in which he allowed five runs over five innings, and he is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in four career starts against the Pirates. But Ray has proven his ability to punch out hitters, entering Sunday's start tied for fourth in the NL with 57 strikeouts. The 25-year-old lefty has recorded at least six strikeouts in each of his seven starts this season.

Things to know about this game

• Both clubs will wear special jerseys for Mother's Day, as they did in Saturday's game. Players will also swing pink bats while sporting other pink gear -- shoes, socks, sleeves and wristbands.

• The D-backs' pitching staff put together 18 games with at least 10 strikeouts this season, the most ever by an NL team through 37 games. The previous record was held by the Nationals, who did so in 17 of their first 37 games last year.

• Nova has not faced the D-backs since 2013 and has limited history with most of their hitters. The only Arizona player he has faced more than six times is catcher Chris Iannetta, who is being evaluated after taking a pitch to the face on Friday.
