I hope Sully made the team watch the Geno backhand pass into traffic in the high slot over and over and over.

“Here is, arguably, the most skilled player in the NHL. But being skilled doesn’t mean you can make plays without thinking, because when you do... and again.”

Murray got another concussion during practice.

Out with no timetable on his return (although I'm sure that speaks to the unpredictable nature of concussions more than the severity).

Man, I'm really starting to think Murray fades out of this league sooner rather than later.

Riikola in for Maatta. Too early in the season to pull a Scandinavian Switch?

Really hope we get Jarry up for some games.

Grant was placed on waivers to make room for Jarry. Hope he clears.

Early updates on some of our favorite players!

Carter Rowney 3 GP 1 G 0 A 1 PT + 0 ATOI 14:04 (45% FO) $1.133 million
Ryan Reaves 3 GP 0 G 0 A 0 PT -1 ATOI 10:12 $2.775 million
Tom Kuhnhackl 1 GP 0 G 0 A 0 PT +1 ATOI 11:42 $700

Yep. Still pretty useless.

Then again, I probably shouldn't list what Rust, Hagelin, Sheahan, and Cullen are doing either.

4th line has scrapped pretty well up to this point. I don't miss Rowney and Mooseknuckle.

We'll see what Johnson and Rikko are all about over the next 4 months.

Depending on how things go with Schultz out, this may be the last season you see him in a Pens uniform

Rough break, because I thin average 5th/6th D-man is about Johnson's ceiling, and Riikola definitely had his worst NHL game against the Habs.

Four months is going to be like a lifetime and there will be other injuries. I like Riikola but Johnson to me is meh. I hope Johnson is just getting adjusted to a new team but...
I have a strange feeling that the Pens are going to have to trade for another D man at some point. Haven't heard too much about any prospects on the blue line coming from WBS.

Can't Rikko and Olek play both sides?

Believe they'll roll without Schultz for those 4 months unless another long term injury occurs. I suggest Mike Green, that's a good replacement if the cost to acquire is right

If you mean Oleksiak can suck from both sides, yes.

It's really a shame that Jack Johnson was signed. If anything this makes the Reaves and Hunwick signings look like small potatoes. Schultz was probably going to go anyway after this season, so maybe damaged goods will get him at a better price.

Either way, minus "Good" Letang and Dumoulin and Riikola (maybe), I don't see the need to keep any of the current defensemen. That says a lot because, while I wasn't a huge fan, I stuck by Maatta with the protection of statistics. I can't do that anymore. If this group is remolded over the next few years, all the better.

The thing that's even more confounding than the love for Reaves last year is the justification and praise for Jack Johnson I see on other boards. I pointed out that -110 +/- for Johnson was pretty tellling. The user, who is one of the more-known posters, responded that "he has played 10 seasons" like it was the reason it was so low, and that Justin Schultz was -67 before coming to Pittsburgh. Ok. So Justin Schultz wasn't a terrible defensemen before coming to Pitt? I could also point to about 50 billion NHL players who had long careers that were plus in +/-.

Fucking weird.

Honestly, Green or Daley would be good fits. Mike Green was more-or-less signed to become an asset in a trade. Both run through next year. Green would be preferable, although if Schultz comes back before too long, I don't think they'd be able to fit both under the cap. A team might want Oleksiak in return?
