Rule 6.01 (i) states: “A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher or otherwise initiate an avoidable collision.’’

It was definitle dirty
While he wasn't Hugely out of the path, he did IMO intentionally whip his leg out amd could have seriously hurt the C. It was a bullshit play.

Par for the course for Chicago under Maddon --- just like dirty Cinci of a few years back with Dirty Dusty Baker at the helm. No doubt they are being coached to do this crap (Kang, anyone? -- That Coghlan fella was a real "nice guy" too, as he delivered that brutal, season-ending "hard baseball slide," as the wine-swilling manager described it back then, to break Kang's leg.)

The Cardinals I respect. The Giants I respect. The Cubs are the 2008 Ravens of MLB --- still wish their team bus would take a right turn into Lake Michigan, followed by most of their asshole fandom.

Illegal by today's rules, but not dirty. Would have been considered "breaking up the double play" for about 100 years of baseball. Check out clips of Hal McRae.

Just because dirty play used to be legal doesn’t mean it wasn’t dirty even when it was legal. Players used to sharpen spikes and slash them high on slides until 1) rules were amended to prohibit it and 2) umpires actually enforced the rule.

And in response to the old time baseball comment above
What I didnt like about the Rizzo play is that it was sneaky not hard
The C was up and making a play to first and likely coudlnt see what Rizzo was doing which was extending well out of his path and whipping his leg to catch the C In the ankles
On a play into second to break up a double play or a play at home the defender sees the runner coming even if it is out of the path.
