Kessel be like “I ain’t got time to bleed.”

But for real, that wiff he had on the PP yesterday was terrible. I think it led to a 2 on 1 short handed break.

Maybe take Kessel of the first PP unit and put Brassard there?

Interesting comments from a Caps blogger.

Quote:
The Capitals lost. No real surprise there. The Capitals are a team that regularly dresses Chandler Stephenson, Devonte Smith-Pelly, Jay Beagle and Alex Chiasson due to the staggering incompetence of their general manager.

The problem is that these guys shouldn't' be anywhere near anything other than a fourth line in the NHL (if that) and with Andre Burakovsky and Tom Wilson out of the lineup, their lack of depth at forward really hurts them.

Contrast that with the Penguins who have a "third" line that would do as most teams first lines.

Also, the Penguins are a great team, this has been a pretty good series and for it to be tied after four games should not surprise anyone. Now it's time for a best of three with two games in Washington.

This is where the Penguins season long bad luck really screws them, because if you spend any time looking at their stats at all, it becomes clear that they were the NHL's best team this year, but that their record was hurt by their low shooting and save percentages. The fact that they don't have home-ice advantage is a bit of a joke, on the part of luck.

For them to have even made the playoffs though - It's actually pretty impressive.

The Pens were 29th in save percentage and 24th in shooting percentage. That is the kind of bad luck that would force virtually any team to miss the playoffs.

The Penguins had the third lowest PDO in the NHL, and only one other team in the bottom ten (the Sharks) also made the Playoffs. Only 3 of the top 16 PDO teams missed the playoffs. (The Devils were the third low PDO team to make the playoffs, if you're wondering).

When this series started, I said that if the Caps wanted to win, they'd have to get extremely good goaltending from Holtby. So far, that seems to hold true. The Capitals are giving a great effort, all things considered.

But this isn't like last year when the Capitals were far and away the superior team. This year, it's reversed. The Capitals are up against the League's best, and they're holding their own, but if they want to advance, they're going to need a little luck and a lot of Holtby.

At least the Cleveland owner was better looking.

If this is another Caps meltdown, it began with the total reversal of the game 2 bullshit goal calls. While this didn't make amends for the league having a heavy hand in deciding game 2, it was nice to see that both goalie interference and whether the puck went in were put into question on the same goal. This time, they got the call right.

The meltdown continued when the Caps took a too many men penalty with a little over a minute left. That's a classic Capitals tactic of not giving your team a chance to win.

After that, Ovechkin got juked out of his jock by Sid, who passed it to Jake for EN goal. Ovechkin kicked the air in frustration. Sid beats Ovy...again.

As this was going on, Oshie got triggered at the situation and, attempting to keep the puck in the zone, launched himself into Letang and began fisticuffs.

On the way into the locker room, Backstrom, one of the quiet betas on the Capitals, was heard saying "Fuck this league!"

I'll put it this way. The Penguins outplayed the Capitals 5v5. The knob slobberers on NBC were too busy talking about the Caps gap control and physicality. Hey guys, they may have been great at both those things, but the problem is they were occurring in the Caps defensive zone. This isn't the best game the Capitals played. They didn't outplay the Penguins. That being said, this was a different type of Capitals game. It was out of their comfort zone in this series and in the history of these two teams. It was an opportunity for them to flip the script on their history. After this series, they could say "We're the Capitals, and we played full team defense and a 2-3 NZT to beat the Penguins. We didn't try to go blow for blow. We didn't try to win by dominating possession. We won by counterattacking and making the most of our chances. We were the underdogs. No one gave us a shot. We proved them wrong"

This was their "moment."
They may have just blown it.

Fantastic post - hope you are right

He’s injured...don’t think we need to go the personal insult route.

Although it is bothersome that he is obviously injured enough that it is affecting his play to the point where he’s a liability, and yet Sullivan still won’t sit him down.

Stanley Cups ought to be more important than Ironman streaks.

I'm sure it is, Jeems. I can't believe anything else. Either the injury itself isn't so bad, and Kessel is just playing shitty...but have to believe that Kessel, as he is, is better in Sully's mind than any other option. Mike Sullivan is NOT Mike Tomlin.

Let's see what the lineup is for tonight.

Sully has commented on it...was in the Trib this morning.

“Phil’s not banged up any more than anyone else is this time of year”.

All hockey coach, this guy is.

8-)
