Center depth has gone from a weakness (Rowney and Gregg McKegg sharing a lineup card seems like a long time ago...) to a strength of the team. I'm not sure how they're going to balance out those forward lines exactly, but there's absolutely killer depth and flexibility there now.

I wouldn't rule out another trade, some forward depth for a solid defenseman sounds like the final piece, perhaps. Cole/Oleksiak pairing was doing well.

Nice work, JR! Certainly better today than yesterday, by a decent margin.

A first is whatever... The pens become the favorites with this move. No one can match the C depth now

The 1 pick would have been steep a month ago.
Cole is difficult to part with but you have to give to get. I bet we get some veteran depth in the next few days.
Just wish this trade had happened earlier in the week so we got our new piece some time to work with the others.

My new lines......

Guentzel, Crosby. Horny
Hagelin, Malkin, Rust
Sheary, Brassard, Kessel
ZAR, Sheahan, Rowney

Dumo, Letang
Maata, Schultz
Hunwick, Oleksiak

Murray, Jarry

Not a lot of PK'ers there. I'm telling you, once Knuckle is healthy he will be in the lineup. Sully loves him. I know you like ZAR but don't be surprised if he is sent down when Hornqvist is healthy. I'm saying such because that is how I think the organization will handle it.

I wouldn’t hate that - I thought Tommy Boy was playing very good hockey- PK is important and we have a lot of scoring options.

As of a minute ago the NHL official site hasn't made mention of the trade. Such a great sport run by a shit show.

Yea I think there will be a minor deal for a defenseman made. Think Hainsey /streit last year

I think there will be no more wingers added, which is fine. Jr got his trophy fish and he's gonna pack up his nets

Hearing on the radio that the details of this deal aren’t final yet and are very complicated. Another team involved, that may have to take on brassard first, then deal him to Pittsburgh for some reason.

Salary retention may be part of it, with it rumored that Pens get out of 18% of brassard’s salary.

Per McKenzie, VGK seems to be the 3rd man in the deal, with salary retention being their part. Given Melnyk's cheap ass, it makes sense.

I saw that just now on NHL network.
So we won't see Brassard until 2-27 at home against Jersey?

Could be. Pirates fans and Sens fans could start a cheap ass owners support group.

New theory making the rounds is that they’re basically laundering money through Vegas.

Teams can only eat up to 50% of a player’s salary in a trade, and that can only be done twice. So theory is that Senators are eating a portion of his salary, then trading him to Vegas who will eat even more of his salary, then Pittsburgh gets him, with Cole going to Vegas and Ottawa getting the draft pick and goalie prospect.

Also theories that maybe there’s more pieces involved.

If Vegas is involved maybe Ian Cole lands there.

Now seeing some tweets saying the NHL rejected the deal and are forcing the teams to restructure it into a more conventional format...though it's still being reported that the deal expected to get done.

It took Rutherford about 8 months, but he's managed to put a plan into place that matches what this team is all about. Something I mentioned after the Reaves trade went down, and something he neglected this entire offseason. On paper, they can roll 4 lines that can score and bring speed. That is the team's identity. This may be the best of the three Penguins teams (on paper) of the last three seasons. The center depth (somehow!) is better than it was the past two seasons. Amazing!

Reaves is a healthy scratch tonight. Jason Mackey was on Madden's radio show today thinking Reaves would be a good trade target to a team out west, especially a return to the Blues. It'd be even better if JR could reverse his mistakes full circle from the offseason and get rid of that bum.

Love it.

Rest of the conference isn’t so excited about, I suspect.

Yup Reaves to Vegas and retains 40%. Pretty good deal in my opinion

The 40% is clutch. Allows a little flexibility to possibly go get a depth type defenseman before Monday afternoon.

Don't know much about the prospects that came back.

Finally found a good summary or the total trade package...

Quote:
Pittsburgh received Brassard, Ottawa forward prospect Vincent Dunn, Vegas forward prospect Tobias Lindberg, and Ottawa's third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Ottawa received Pittsburgh defenseman Ian Cole, goalie prospect Filip Gustavsson, its first-round pick in the 2018 draft, and its third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Vegas received Pittsburgh forward Ryan Reaves and a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft that belonged to the Vancouver Canucks. The Golden Knights will retain 40 percent of Brassard's remaining salary this season.

Unsurprisingly, neither of the prospects are worth much. Still really pleased with the outcome.

Rumor has it that the jets were in the running for Brassard and that's the reason Vegas stepped in to broker the deal. Vegas preferred Brassard stayed in the east
