Just because its fun to track, listed below are some results from the past few seasons. Key takeaways:
- The Steelers have attended every pro day for their 1st round pick (I don't have all the pro day details, sorry)
- At least 3 draft picks have come as pre-draft visits since 2012. Pay attention to rounds 3 & 4:
- In the last 3 drafts, 6 out of 7 3rd & 4th round picks have been a pre draft visits
- 4 out of the last 6 3rd round picks have been pre-draft visits
- 6 out of the last 8 4th round picks have been pre-draft visits
- With the exception of 2014, the top 3 picks in the last 6 drafts have corresponded almost perfectly with the top 3 position invites. 2015 was slightly off, but that was a terrible TE class.

2017
Top Position visits: EDGE (8), WR (5), CB (4)

Tombert Pro Day visits: Florida, Wake Forest, Kentucky, LSU, Mizzou, Louisville

Top 3 picks: Dupree (EDGE, Kentucky), Golson (CB, Ole Miss), Coates (WR, Auburn)

Pre-draft visits selected: Golson, Coates, Grant, James

2014
Top Position visits: CB (7), WR (5), LB (5), DL (5), S (4)

Tombert Pro Day visits: ??????

Top 3 picks: Shazier (LB, tOSU), Tuitt (DL, Notre Dame), Archer (WR/RB, Kent St)

2012
Top Position visits: OL (6), LB (5), WR (5), DL (4), TE (3)

Fittipaldo said it is not considered local and the visit counts. I thought PSU players were considered local as well.

Only Pitt, Robert Morris, and Duquesne are considered local. Or a player from the Pittsburgh metro area

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/04/05/breaking-down-the-rules-regarding-pre-draft-rookie-visits/
Quote:
Players who attend college or reside in a club’s “metropolitan area” can be given a physical examination without counting against the 30-player limit, unless the club provides transportation for the visit. Also, a player who attends college or whose hometown is in a club’s “metropolitan area” may be timed and tested at the club’s facility, as long as the club does not provide transportation.

“Metropolitan area” is defined as contiguous suburbs. There isn’t a 25-mile, 50-mile, or any other type of mileage radius rule. The league office uses the 2011 Rand-McNally Road Atlas to determine the metropolitan area of a city.

I thought there was a new rule - or one being discussed maybe, about 5 big five conference players being allowed to visit and not count...or something like that.

Anyone?

I honestly don't know if there are new rules surrounding those visits. I'll defer to the insiders unless i hear otherwise.

Also, for today:

I cannot believe they are actually wasting a visit on Brogan Roback. He is terrible.

According to a friend of mine who is a Grad Assistant at Eastern Michigan, Colbert has been on campus twice to see him.

Avery is an EDGE. Would be a decent pick on day 3.

Justin Watson, an All-American WR from Penn via South Fayette, visited with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert on Good Friday. Did not get a combine invite but tested very well at Penn's pro day last month. Considered a mid- or late-round prospect.

IDK, have you met Trey Quinn or Austin Pettis? Cut from that Kupp cloth.

I think we all know that the steelers will be drafting a WR in this draft just a matter of what round.

Wouldn't surprise me if they were also looking at WR Wilson as well. At the Boise pro day. ;)

my oldest child goes to SMU, and he's been raving about Trey Quinn since the Fall, even w/ C. Sutton on that team....Got a chance to watch Quinn at Parent's Weekend game---think he had 12 catches or something....Perfect slot receiver in the 5th...as Pettis likely goes in the 4th...imho....

There are a TON of fine WRs on day 3.

Thomas Davis from FIU
Richie James from Middle Tennessee
Jonah Tinnaman from BYU

I like Trey Quinn, too... but Davis offers more all-around game and Tinnaman is like a taller Tyreke Hill. Their QB situation there in BYU was first read and run like hell-- often you see Tinnaman waving his arms wide open or 5 yards behind the defense. He's definitely raw, but for bubble screens and deep balls... he's your guy.

Quote:
Freakishly athletic WR Jonah Trinnaman (5-10 1/2, 192) put on a show: 4.31/4.28 40s, 41.5 vertical, 12-0 broad. Wow!!!

This is a really weak WR class ( a'la 2006). I will not be surprised if no WR are drafted in the 1st round.

I guess what I'm saying is... the distance between the top guys and the bottom guys is not huge. There are a couple I don't mind in rounds 2 or 3, and then I'd be just as happy with a handful of late round guys.
