Bell said before practice that he would sit out again or retire next year if they tag me

He better take care of fucking business

One of the National Football League's biggest stars says he would consider sitting out a full season, or even retiring, if his team tries to use the league's franchise tag on him for the second straight year.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell made the comments to ESPN, saying that he is optimistic that he won't be forced to make such a decision. "But I would definitely consider it," he said, before Thursday's practice.

Bell played under the franchise tag this season, earning $12.1 million. That number is expected to increase to about $14.5 million next year.

The Steelers can tag a player between February 20 and March 6, with the two sides having until July 16 to agree to a long-term contract.

Bell says he just wants the team to "value me." That after turning down a long-term deal worth up to $30 million for the first two years last offseason.

"Just get the numbers straight exactly where we want them. I'm not going to settle for anything," Bell said. "I know what I do and what I bring to the table. I'm not going out here getting the ball 400 times if I'm not getting what I feel I'm valued at."

Bell caught 85 passes for 655 yards and rushed 321 times for 1,291 yards and scored 11 total touchdowns this season. If he did decide to sit out, Bell acknowledged that his career would likely be over.

"I'm happy where I'm at," he said. "Football is kind of like my job, it's not something that makes me unhappy, but I don't need it to be happy. I've made the money that I feel I needed to make, my family would be good. I don't necessarily care if I get more money or not."

If he doesn’t care about money, why would he sit out over money? Also, BS someone would turn down a 14m payday when they care bout money; that’s crazy. Threating to sit out is only leverage.

Logic says neither of those things will happen.

Non-story.

People saying he was joking.

But he turned down that huge deal before.

Maybe someone in the media can write an article about Bens bathroom escapades or how he's a bad tipper and publish it Sunday morning right before the game.

Mother fuckers. I wish more people got punched in the face.

I totally get not playing for anything less than your number. But his concept of what that number should be are kind of messed up.

Good Lord - the right answer of course is

"We're trying to win a Super Bowl and I have an important playoff game to focus on. There will be plenty of time to deal with my contract once the season is over."

Then he can bitch and moan all he wants about how $14M isn't enough.

Seriously, how much of this year's drama is self inflicted?

The only drama here is if Bell puts up 160 yards per game from scrimmage in the playoffs and we win the SB. The only thing he has not done is perform in the playoffs. If he does then he has all the cards. If Bell is in the top 2 in SBMVP voting --FO and fans would be out of reasons not to pay him what he wants.

He played this year under the tag....no way he's not playing next year with a 20% bump.

Honestly, if Ben DOES retire....the first phone call I make is rescinding Bell's tag. Only way I'm tagging Bell, or entertaining a multi-year deal (for not more than 4/$40M) is if Ben is still my QB.

Guy is just not even worth the $12M per year they offered.....Simply not worth 50% more than anyone else when a handful of RB's are as, if not more, efficient at a much better value.

And I was someone who defended Bell and BELIEVED he might be worth it, certainly in a league that does appear to undervalue the RB position (but let's not start that debate). Bell wasn't the same player this year he was in past years - maybe the wheels are already coming off He piled up most of the numbers he had this year because he gets way more touches than anyone else. That would be a fine argument in his favor IF this wasn't the first year he managed to stay healthy (knock on wood).

I feel like he's had times where he's both complained about getting the ball too much and getting it too little.

After Jax1 he def said he should get the ball more (even though he had 25 touches that game). Now he's suggesting if he's going to get 400 touches he should be paid more....

"I'm not going out here getting the ball 400 times if I'm not getting what I feel I'm valued at."

Left out of the OP’s post..

“Asked about leaving a productive career on the table, Bell cited his favorite player growing up, Barry Sanders, who retired with good years left in his legs.

Sanders played 10 years. Bell has played five. The years are irrelevant, Bell said.

"It's about leaving a legacy. People will always remember what you did," Bell said. "That's why I run the way I run. I feel like I wanted to run differently than everybody else did. And I want to do things that everybody else hasn't done. That's how I've envisioned everything going forward."

If Bell retired after this season he’d be an afterthought in three years.... He’s really ALREADY thinking he’s earned Sanders ‘legacy’.

Laughable.

I think the current rookie class' success this year proves that productive rbs can be found in the draft for a lot less than 14+ mill per year. Like drugs, just say NO! Let him retire!

Ehh. He is a top three back in the league. Triple threat. Always hesitant to give RBs big dollar deals. I tag and trade him.

Yes, but there are probably a handful of other guys you can make that argument for.....therefore, he's ALSO arguably not a top-5 back. And that would be strictly looking at stats, and ignoring that Bell has a top OL, QB and receiving game to make his job easier.

First of all, he never said anything about currently achieving any sort of legacy compared to Sanders. He used him as the model for his career. And let's be real Bell has done things at the RB position that have created a statistical legacy that has not been done before by anyone- including Sanders. The only thing he hasn't done is perform well in the playoff well enough for the Steelers to win the SB. Bell is a rare star and if he proves his worth in getting us a trophy- he will be paid handsomely and some of you guys will have to get over that.

Stop it with the trash heap RB stuff- Ben is only Ben because he doesn't have 6 dudes in his face every third and 6+ and that's because of the threat of Bell. If Ben retires next year- a trained howler monkey could get this team to the playoffs giving the ball to Bell and throwing into single coverage to Brown. No one in the league is on Bell's planet- no rookie, no one- not even Elliot.

If he is tagged he is guaranteed to play! Why? Because if he is tagged for the 3rd year he gets QB pay. He and PS are over a barrel. No way he skips a year and collects nothing, versus collecting franchise tag plus 20%, with the guarantee of hitting free agency or collecting QB money the following season.

He and his agent are not that smart I suspect. Am I missing something?

How is this team a disaster? It is 13-3 and coming off a bye.

A reporter asked him a question- he answered it. He is playing to not be tagged next year that's a lot of motivation. Bell rejected an offer because he wanted to prove something. The only thing left to prove is getting this team #7 and if he does that being the star of the team- his value to this team will be cemented. This guy is concerned about legacy and he wants the money that goes along with being on the plus side of that- who wouldn't?

And before anyone starts talking about getting rid of Bell, best talk with Ben and gauge his reaction. I think he'd be the first to tell you- pay the man.

What?

Gurley, Zeke, and David Johnson are at least on Bell's planet.

The only reason Bell is who he is is because the threat of AB/Ben generally leaves Bell with a lot fo room to work with. They each make the others better but, honestly, of the three, I think Bell might be the most replaceable with a player of similar skills but not quite the magic... in fact, Deangelo Williams pretty much fits that bill.
