Yep. But that's how Tomlin rolls. They play field position against bad teams, especially on the road, and try not to beat themselves. You'd think Tomlin would look at history and realize that's probably not the best approach....but he's an idiot.

Outlaw was on the side of good execution today as was Conner. Conner wasn't given much room to run today with a porous OLine. Bryant was stuck in 2nd gear today. I did see him open several times where Ben either chose not to pass him the ball or didn't see him. I think we see different Bryant and Bell in Heinz Field next Sunday. I really hope the OLine picks up their step too. Reduce the penalties with better execution.

I though JJ and Connor both largely sucked.....JJ is just a horrible run blocker.....lazy soft stupid untalented.??...its hard for me me to be specific...but damn does he get his ass shoved around....caught 2 TDs and im afraid those plays will save his ass from being benched at least til the bye unfortunately....

Connor......i couldve understood a sympathy draft in the 7th for a cancer patient.....i kinda can see the 53rd 52nd ST spot for him... maybe....hes slow and without power or strength for the nfl at RB......no way should he see the field before Watson or Bellvor the 5th WR for that matter....Rosie Nix is a better football player....

BUT the self righteous Steelers GOTTA prove their point.....hammer that square peg for all eternity

Did we complete 1 successful dig route (pass between the hashes and behind the lbers)? This offense for whatever reason doesn't threaten the whole deep middle. I just don't fuckin get it

I get this critique but the Steelers did not run the ball well at all today so grain of salt. What I can say for sure is retire the bubble screen to Bryant. Dude has no wiggle and is an alien 15+ yards from scrimmage only. Better knock off that rust soon.

The horizontal passing in the 1st quarter was pitiful.

When I saw Hunter on the inactive list it made me annoyed. Having Hunter out there today, to have two size/speed freaks like Bryant and Hunter, might have made a difference. They were trying to stymie Ben going deep to Bryant but if Ben also had Hunter to throw to as well? Well, at least we had Darrius Hayward-Bey active.

I saw him make a tackle on a punt return, after Peppers ran for 20 yards. Bey also had a penalty for blocking on a punt return of ours and that backed us up near our end zone. Yeah, DHB, the special teams God that is our best special teams player!!!

Again, Brown got his catches and yards but the offense scored just 21 points, and really, to be totally accurate this offense only scored 14 points, because the special teams scored the first TD.

This offense doesn't need Brown to catch 150 passes this year, it NEEDS Bryant to catch 65-70, it NEEDS Vance McDonald to be that vertical TE and have 55 catches.

Just one game, but it looks like the same old story on offense, feed Brown and once Bell shakes the rust off, feed Bell and ignore the other options on offense. Ironic though that Jesse James scored the 2 TDs for this offense today. For as much as Bell and Brown are fed the ball in this offense, where is their TD production?

This has always been a red herring. Coaches job aren't to run a scheme that works if everyone perfectly executes; its to put the players in position to most likely be able to execute. Steelers coaches failed to do this today.

This. And FWIW Steelers have an average D/ST.

Offense has some work but they'll get there.

The Browns front 7 on D is the strength of their team. They are pretty good.

They apparently practice it in camp but rarely if ever use it in games. The defense called today basically is an answer to Haley's U-shaped offense: everything near the line of scrimmage and horizontal, with occasional deep ball on quick sideline. They took away what steelers under Haley do 90% of the time and we refused to adjust. Crossing patterns. Dig routes. Intermiediate curls.

Yeah they seem to accomplish what the steelers set out to usually do that is pressure the O backfield but they don't leave gaping holes in the secondary like we usually have.

Wasn't so much that they sacked Ben but they made him throw early. Consistently. And they just lost their #1 piece in their backfield.

If I'm Gregg Williams I'm popping a few beers tonight. I won that game.

Now it's true steelers O didn't give a stiff challenge

I was hoping more from Bryant... But he did his job. He backed the safety about 25 yards off the LOS. Retodd the cuckold refused to take advantage of it. Force the safeties up and then hit Bryant over the top OR force corners back and hit Brown underneath.

So right -- with the threat at WR... gotta attack the middle of the field.

That's because Haley's playbook consists of 30 plays. He doesn't have imagination and is more predictable than a child in a sand box (yes, they play with sand!) He literally can't adjust because he can see beyond his own faults. I swear, you can take a look at any three games and probably wouldn't be able to distinguish between them from an offensive play calling standpoint - same plays in just a little different order is all you'll see. My 7 y.o. grand-daughter would wipe his ass up in either chess or checkers because he simply can't see beyond the current move.

Didn't they basically just run a deep Cover-2?

Not really anything new or innovative....Haley's offense struggles with good DL that can pressure and stop the run. Every offense struggles with that, but PIT more so because of the reluctance to utilize the middle of the field. I mean, why do we employ a slot receiver if we really aren't going to use him?

The solace I take is that looking around the league, lots of good offenses really struggled today. Not playing starters in preseason does affect veteran teams like ours more. We will learn a lot more next week.

I thought he showed some nice pressures and smaller blitzes. Again seemed designed to not so much go for the hone run sack but hurry ben up a bit.

He also crowded the line, sort of a run blitz, jam the lanes en route to the QB.

The vertical game is the right way to attack that but you need to have good protection and plus Haley I agree is averse to that.

Our offense could have probably jumped out some more even given how they played.

Thing I like about them I think is they were consistent. Our D always seems feast or famine. They had very few breakdowns and did a very good job containing all steelers skill talent

True on the rust factor , but did you see anything different regarding the structure of the offense? I didn't and that's what should be very concerning to everyone here. Same old shit from an unimaginative playcaller

If you're a DC in the league, are you at ALL frightened by this offense if you can just roll out a cover 2 and prevent the big plays?

Well, it's not quite that simple. You have to have the DL to stop the run, or be able to run blitz on your way to the QB (and last year, unlike most of Ben's career, the OL stood up to that).

The concern is that any team with a good DL...Haley is just going to sit on his thumb.

I had hopes for Haley. I've defended him in the past. And I think he sometimes gets unfair criticism. But the guy is flat out mediocre on his best days.

Kinda where im at.

No way do I believe Tomlin has final say on OC DC player personnel or draft picks at this point. I gotta think he knows thats a less than optimal way to run a team but at the same time he kinda thinks hes up to the challenge of steering the Steelers in the right direction regardless

Yep, the "Company Man" or "Potted Plant" theory. Whatever your favorite moniker is.
