How about Jake Butt or Jordan Leggett in the 4th,

Sorry, B2B I don't buy it. The dude's stats are as follows...

Was that production worth all those millions? Not in my opinion. Terrible business decision on the Steelers behalf. They were 'Fleeced' and this wasn't the first time. More importantly, never, ever allow it again. JMO

He was paid like the 13th-16th best TE. His stats, even accounting for time missed-- about 35th in the league. Jesse James played all year, including starting at the #1 spot for 10 games, and he had a whopping 34 more yards receiving.

Green didn't pan out the way anyone hoped, but the contract wasn't that big a disaster-- I said at the time it was basically a prove-it deal, and that's what it turned out to be.

Good point. It is astounding how many people who follow the NFL don't really understand how the financials really work. I don't have the greatest grasp on it myself in a lot of ways, but the one real thing that matters is the guaranteed money and the signing bonus to a large extent. Green's deal was a one gear prove it deal with the option for the Steelers to walk away after a year, whether it got sold as a 4 year deal or a 20 year deal.
I may not know the financials like some do, but it seems to me that they took a chance and came up on the short end of the deal. Money isn't the only deciding factor. He didn't live up to expectations, and it took playing time away from future players. Grimble was non existent for exactly that reason, so they shoved aside another player(s) to make room for green - and he didn't put up the kind of numbers they expected him to. Not only that, if they did in fact take a risk, that means they knew his injury history and knew it would be a problem. I call it a bad decision for that reason alone.

I liked the signing. I don't begrudge them talking a riskier when they felt they were close.

But there's an entire year of this guy severely underperforming. His steelers career will for me be 2-3 "nice grabs".

An entire year of not trying to remedy or address this. It really looks to me like the actively chose to not address it. No wonder Ben is losing heart.

Dead giveaway was that his pay after 2016 was 100% salary, no bonus.

Haha -- interesting! It was so over the top that I thought it was faked.

Just like you all are 'Astounded' by the following fans that don't 'understand' the financials I am equally 'Astounded' that you all believe this to be a solid '1year' tryout deal. You wanna piss millions down the drain for compromised personnel that's your insane tactic. I would rather spread that money else where knowing there will be some type of return dividend, plenty of other talent on the market. I knew there was an underlining reason Green came so cheaply. BTW, if we all understood the inner workings of the NFL financial process we'd be working as an agent or for some franchise. Don't patronize yourselves too much you may break an arm patting yourselves on the back.

I do from the standpoint that Cor-Ten mentioned. Was it my money? Nope. Thank God! Was it worth the millions? IMO, Nope! Are we chattering over something that we all have no control over? Yep! That's what discussion boards are for. We can agree to disagree. I'm already over this. Just wanted to share an opinion from the 'less educated' side of the fence, as it was so eloquently put. Moving on.... :|

Edit: deleted post I was answering.

This is really what it comes down to for me:

- They took a chance on Green. It didn't work out. It was low risk, high reward. If it would have worked out, they would have had a difference maker for a bargain price. I applaud them for trying. Time to move on.

- They like Jesse James and see him as an adequate starter until a TE they like falls to them.

- They think Bryant will be back and return to form.

- They think JuJu will replace Green as a weapon in the slot.

- They didn't like any tight ends in the later rounds and didn't want to waste a draft pick on them.

- They just lost their most consistent player over the last 13 years in Greg Warren and saw a chance to replace him without missing a beat. If the LS they drafted is what they think he is, they drafted a 10+ year starter in the 6th round.

For me, part of the fun of following the Steelers is trying to predict what moves they'll make in the draft and free agency. I enjoy watching those players over the course of their careers and seeing if they pan out or not. I don't delude myself into thinking I know football better than their coaches, or that I can evaluate talent better than their front office and scouting department. I try to roll with the punches -- like Green not working out -- and then wait to see what they do next. It's something over which I have no control, and I am merely an outside observer. As such, I don't whip myself into a frenzy when they make a move I don't like. My typical reaction is, "huh, that's interesting; let's see what happens." I'm not trying to suggest that this is the only way one can enjoy following a football team, but it seems I suffer far less aggravation than most here. It's not as if we're following a bottom-dweller of the NFL, committing one blunder after another. Might be time to stop and smell the roses. Just a thought.
