They just cucked Bos. I guess he has no leverage at this point. If he gets cut, good chance he'll be sitting at home most of the season.

Why would anyone agree to potentially risk a $2M bonus [if that's actually the case]? It's not like Boswell wouldn't have multiple opportunities to earn a job somewhere else.

It's almost like PIT said if you don't have the confidence you can win the job, then we should just cut you now.

Neat drill, hope they get the RB's more involved in the passing game. Conner did some damage to teams catching the ball last year.

Totally agree, both Conner and Samuels were awesome last season in the passing game.

This whole narrative, fairy tale that Bell had, that he was like this second WR out there was always bullshit.

This is what Bell did in his 62 games as a Steeler:

397 targets, producing 312 catches for 2,660 yards, an 8.5 yard average and 7 TDs. His yards per target was 6.7, and the TD percentage from those targets was a lowly 1.76. His catch percentage was 78.6

So, in 2018, without Bell in the passing game there was a lot of gloom and doom, how in the hell were the Steelers going to replace Bell in the passing game?

Conner and Samuels, both effectively rookies, and with a new rookie Offensive Coordinator in Randy Fitchner, who has last called an offense back in 2006 at Memphis (college), the RBs shit all over Bell in the passing game in year one.

100 targets, 81 catches, for 696 yards, an 8.6 yards per catch average, 4 TDs. Their yards per target were 6.96, their TD percentage off of those targets was 4.0, their catch percentage was 81.

The combo of Conner and JaySam outperformed Bell in yards per catch, yards per target, catch percentage and TD percentage.

Sure, I am comparing what the young RB duo did in just one 16 game season to Bell's 62 game total, but still what might Conner and Samuels do with another 297 targets?

Give Conner/Samuels a combined 397 targets and compare it to Bell's 397 career targets, what might that look like??

Well, since Ben already hit the duo for 4 TDs last season in 100 pass attempts, he might have 16 TDs in 397 pass attempts. And yet he only had 7 TDs throwing to Bell in the same amount of attempts?? See how that fairy tale narrative that Bell was so great as a pass catcher starts to fall apart?? How many TDs did Bell leave out on the field?? How much was he hurting the offense? Some players are not good at finishing, at actually producing touchdowns. For Bell to only have a career high of 11 TDs in a season and then for Conner and JaySam to combine for 16 TDs in year one?? Doesn't get more damaging than that for Bell, just proves how over rated you are.

Labriola explains the Boswell scenario...

Quote:
In the news this week was that Chris Boswell agreed to postpone a $2 million roster bonus that was to be paid to him this offseason. With Boswell’s permission, the bonus now will be paid following the team’s preseason finale vs. the Carolina Panthers, which is slightly less than 48 hours before the NFL requires all teams to cut their rosters to 53 players. In other words, Boswell is going to have to compete for his bonus.

• Why would Boswell agree to this? Because if he had not, the Steelers would have cut him rather than pay that amount of money to a kicker who may or may not rebound from a below-the-line 2018 season. Had that happened, Boswell – even if he had gotten a job with another NFL team – likely would have had to sign for the NFL minimum.

• This way, he gets a chance to compete for his current contract, which if he regains his form and keeps his job would pay him somewhere north of $10 million over the next four years. https://www.steelers.com/news/labriola- ... icks-starr

Also, from the same article Hilton's bid to get himself in place for a C2...

Quote:
• Speaking of defensive backs, Mike Hilton is placing an interesting bet on himself during this offseason program. As a player not yet eligible even for restricted free agency, Hilton has yet to sign his one-year tender as an exclusive rights free agent, but since he is allowed to participate in the offseason program without doing so he has been a regular attendee.

• Hilton would like the same outcome as Al Villanueva got a couple of years ago when he took a similar tack as an exclusive rights free agent and ended up with a four-year contract that is paying him on the level of the starting left tackle he is.

• But what makes Hilton’s move a gamble is that he’s not a starting left tackle, and that his 2018 statistics weren’t as eye-popping as his 2017 statistics. Another difference is that while the Steelers had no clear-cut fallback option at left tackle when Villanueva coaxed a long-term deal out of the team when it didn’t have to give him one, there are about a dozen defensive backs currently on the roster without a clear-cut role for 2019.

• Certainly not all of those dozen have the skill-set to play slot-corner, and maybe fewer than a handful are legitimate threats to Hilton’s playing time. But one of those few is Cam Sutton, a former No. 3 draft pick who’s entering his third NFL season and is entering a phase in his career where he’s going to have to make a positive impression himself to earn a second NFL contract.

• And as an exclusive rights free agent, Hilton has no recourse if the Steelers decline to offer him a long-term contract, because the rules of the CBA dictate that he either plays for the Steelers or doesn’t play at all. https://www.steelers.com/news/labriola- ... icks-starr

To me this says, "we really like to make a place on our roster for you" so the best of luck to Gray for adapting to the many challenges of playing anywhere on the line but center. So far.

Quote:
Steelers 7th-rounder Derwin Gray spends OTAs at 4 positions; left guard this week.

“I look at it as me being a guy who can play different roles and play different spots when needed,” Gray said. “I’ve showed the versatility that I can play anywhere on the o-line. “

Reading/hearing a lot of good things out of OTA's regarding Diontae Spencer. Kid is a lightning flash and has soft hands with the college production to confirm it. Could be another dark horse to make the roster carving out a returner role for himself. SBI...

Washington dropping 15 pounds is great news to me.

We might see a different player this season.

Speed in the middle of the defense.

Quote:
According to Tunch Ilkin and Craig Wolfley, the speed and athleticism of the new group has been really evident so far through the first two weeks of OTAs. “One of the things that has really jumped out at me is the speed of the defense. They are really flying to the ball”, Ilkin said in a report for the team’s website.

“You look at Devin Bush, the first-round pick from Michigan—what a stud athlete. And then Mark Barron, maybe even more athletic”, he went on, adding of Barron, “he is thicker than I thought he was. He is a lot bigger”. He also said of Gilbert that he is “a big fan” and that he “shows a lot of speed”.

I like that scenario with Boswell. Will put some serious pressure on him through camp and all 4 games of the preseason. Dude will be competing for a massive sum of money.

The only notable absences have been starting right guard David DeCastro and starting free safety Sean Davis. DeCastro has been away celebrating the recent birth of his second child, while Davis has been sidelined with a minor injury. https://247sports.com/nfl/pittsburgh-st ... 132466379/
Didn't even know Davis was out of OTA's. I guess if there's an injury now is [lesser evil] the best time to deal with it. Hammy?
