Yup- exactly what happened

When you fall in love, you tend to minimize, or ignore altogether, a persons deficiencies. That’s great when looking for a partner for life...not so much when searching for good football players...

Some people on both the scouting and coaching staffs probably fell in love with Troy and Ben, if it makes you feel better.

I have to say-- in both love and football scouting-- I am more in favor of their philosophy than yours.

In love, you should love unconditionally... you accept the totality of the person. Any other strategy and you are setting yourself up for a whole bunch of pain and a lot less joy in the relationship.

With football, it should be all about: what is this player capable of and willing to do? Falling in love with the best that player can be and the best parts of his character is a solid way to build your team. It's the coaches' responsibility to channel that will and refine that player. If you draft for flawless or even the least flawed players, you end up with a bunch of high floor, low ceiling players. You keep your job as GM and your team goes nowhere.

You have to be willing to completely lay it on the line and fail in either sphere to be truly successful.

My biggest issue/concern with Johnson is all the dropped balls over the past 2 seasons.

12 drops in 2017
8 drops on 57 catchable passes in 2018

For a receiver whose average route length is under 15 yards those numbers are beyond Limas Sweed concerning to me

It seems like a mental issue...He makes some very difficult catches

I dont buy into the QB play excuse for the drops because of the huge number in 17 with Whiteside as his QB

One of the most difficult things to judge on tape.

Is this a guy who lacks coordination or whose natural hands position is out of whack? Or is he late to get his hands up? Just needs to relax and catch the ball before turning upfield?

You really have to get to know a kid and his coach. It seems like they did that in this case, but you never know.

Like Sweed or Coates... when a WR loses that confidence, it can take a lot to bring them back. Johnson doesn't seem to have a big confidence problem, but it's something to watch out for, certainly.

They never fell in love with Artie Burns.

I don't doubt they said they loved Burns, but it's utter horseshit.

They BADLY wanted William Jackson and expected him to be there so they could run to the podium.

When Cincy grabbed Jackson (was it one or two picks before the Steelers? I forget.) Tombert FREAKED OUT and panic set in.

They grabbed Burns likely barely knowing anything about him. I never bought they wanted Burns for a SECOND.

Speculation made with the benefit of hindsight.

Burns looked very promising his rookie season. For whatever reason (likely mental), he has regressed horribly.

Agreed. Speculation.

What's your take? If both William Jackson and Artie Burns are there, which one do you believe the Steelers draft?

If I remember correctly,I wasn’t that crazy about Jackson coming out. But doesn’t matter what I think, or who has become the better player. This is about who the Steelers may have “fell in love with”. Of course in hindsight this sounds absurd, but this is an organization that drafted Jarvis Jones, Bud Dupree, Terrell Edmunds, and Ziggy Hood all in the first round, so it’s entirely possible that they were indeed in love with Burns, and preferred him over Jackson.

Here is MY speculation.

They knew plenty about Burns and the other 150 players they say they have on their board every year. Come the fuck on. A team of dozens of scouts spends years studying these fuckin guys.

What likely happened, is their sheer gaping hole at CB influenced their valuation of Burns on the boards. He magically moved ahead of other players that had better profiles in a non-CB need year.

OF COURSE William Jackson was rated higher. But when he went off the board, they had LONG AGO talked themself into Burns being a worthy consolation.

Athletically, they were probably right. They couldn't fully evaluate his hollow head though.

Nah, I saw the Burns pick as an absolute panic grab.

Similar to when Landry Jones was taken like 2 picks after the back up QB they REALLY wanted was drafted by the Giants, I believe it was.

Sure, we'll never know for sure but I would bet my left nut the Steelers absolutely shit themselves when Jackson was taken by the Bengals.

Just an absolute certainty to me.

We're going to rue the day the Steelers chose this guy over Kelvin Harmon. Book it.

"this guy" meaning who?

I think we chose about 17 guys over Harmon -

Including Isiah Fucking Buggs LOL

i mean, the entire NFL thought this guy was shit - he almost ended up a UDFA (and probably would've been better off that way than where he ended up getting drafted)

Diontae Johnson is 4 months older than Juju.

Johnson made a lot of difficult catches in addition to having drops. I will definitely give him the benefit of the doubt. I do not expect drops to be a problem. One of Johnson’s best qualities is his open field running and cuts. That should be a strength.

Oh boy -- that's not good.

Is he another 24 year old "rookie" like Jarvis?

This pick seems like another #14 to me.
