Steelers hired former Bengals’ defensive coordinator Teryl Austin as senior defensive assistant with a focus on the secondary, per source.

He came on Cincy after Guenther.

He was fired in November his DB's were hurt all year maybe because they were too aggressive......

Not liking what this fucking team is doing.

I don't think anyone is

Sure, let's keep Butler on. Making baby moves when big changes need to happen.

Fuck the gm and fuck Tomlin.

Austin’s defense became the first in the Super Bowl era to surrender 500+ yards of offense in three consecutive games.

It’s almost as if Tomlin is spitting in the eye of fans pissed off at the collapse this season.

A big “fuck you fans...I ain’t goin’ NOWHERE and we’ll do whatever the fuck we want”.

It's almost as if Tomlin wants to get fired but EMR won't let him go.

So shady the way Tomlin and the Steelers operate.
Zero transparency.

Take my transplant hometown falcons. Dan Quinn fired both his coordinators. He then hired former head coaches and former falcon OCs koetter and mularkey to run the offense AND hire a dude for clock management and challenges so he could assume the role of DC. He didn’t keep dead weight around. He fired them and freely answered all questions about his rationale to the moves.

Tomlin thinks he’s outsmarting the fan base and maybe even his owner by adding a title to Butler and hiring a castoff and throwing a couple titles at him.

Just be more forthright ya barrel of monkey nuts you’re not that smart.

Why go to such lengths to protect Butler. Just tell the truth he’s been demoted. Tomlins gotta be carrying Keith’s baby. There can be no other explanation for this level of chicanery

So what of Tom Bradley? Is he fired or did he get a new title too like secondary coach/ associate long snapper coach

Could be Art II knows all about this.

As for Bradley he’s still there. The rationale is that since they’re in sub-packages all the time with anywhere from 5 to 7 DBs on the field, they need two DB coaches.

I dunno! Can someone here tell me, at the very least, that Austin has an eye for CB talent. I'd be alright with this move if I was told Austin may be a terrible coach but has drafted secondary gems over the years. The Steelers have an eye for talent at a few positions, BUT corner back is NOT one of them. I hoping maybe they're bringing someone in from the outside to evaluate the CB draft.

Did Austin draft Slay??? Has he been in charge of a secondary when ANY all pros were drafted? Could he possibly have been brought in to help them with the CB draft?

I also think he was coaching with Bradley at one time. Shit move by the Steelers imo I don't see where the improvement is and now you giving Butler more to worry about.

Wondering how that shores up all the communication problems the D has had.

Austin's first season as a DC was coaching the Lions defense that was #3 in points allowed and #2 in yards.

That offseason is when they jettisoned Suh and were dogshit in the years that followed.

Also, Austin has coached on two teams that made it to the Super Bowl.

The 2005 Seahawks and the 2008 Cardinals. Both teams lost to the Steelers.

Could be wrong, but I'm guessing with his experience as a DC and DB coach he was hired to learn the defensive philosophies now and possibly replace Butler next season if he doesn't start off too hot or even Bradley. I don't love the move but I also don't hate it either, seems like a two heads are better than one approach to two of the more lacking areas on the team.

Would also like to see a QB coach brought in as I believe not having one is playing a role in Ben taking so many Wed practices off.

entire Wiki page right here.

Quote:
Teryl Austin (born March 3, 1965) is an American football coach who serves as an assistant defensive and secondary coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was previously the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2014 to 2017 and most recently the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018 .
Career

Austin was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He played college football at the University of Pittsburgh from 1984 to 1987, where he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter. He played in the 1984 Fiesta Bowl and the 1987 Bluebonnet Bowl. Austin played one season with the Montreal Machine of the World League of American Football in 1991.

Austin then began a career in coaching, landing a position as a graduate assistant at Penn State in 1991. In 1993, he accompanied fellow Penn State assistant Jim Caldwell to Wake Forest where he served as secondary coach.[1] Austin went on to serve on the coaching staffs at Syracuse and Michigan before joining the Seattle Seahawks' staff in 2003, helping Seattle advance to Super Bowl XL in 2006.

He joined the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff as coach of defensive backs in 2007. In 2009, he helped the team reach Super Bowl XLIII, where the Cardinals would lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.

On February 12, 2010, it was announced that Austin had been hired as the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators.[2] His tenure as defensive coordinator ended following the Gators' 37–24 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions in the 2011 Outback Bowl, and head coach Urban Meyer's resignation in December 2010.

On January 26, 2011, it was announced that Austin had been hired as the secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens, and helped lead them to a Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers.[3]

On January 16, 2014, it was announced that Austin had been hired as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.[4]

On January 11, 2018, it was announced that Austin had been hired as the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. [5] On November 12, 2018, Teryl Austin was relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator.

On January 8, 2019 it was announced that Austin had been hired as the Senior Defensive Assistant/Secondary for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Nothing they are doing so far makes any sense with the exception of Joey Porter.

Firing RB coach, Butler still has a job, Danny Smith still has a job, hiring Austin.....

You know damn well they are going to fuck up the AB trade. My guess is they get a 3rd rounder, and some jag-off corner.

They won't be aggressive in FA either. They'll worry about bringing back players like Berry, LT Walton, Nat Berhe etc.

The offense will struggle at times next year and the defense will be the same old bullshit we've been watching the past few years.

We will be in a far worse situation at this time next year.

Tomlin keeping Butler and Danny Smith so he has someone to scapegoat next year if things don't turn around. Guessing AB probably saved one of their jobs.....

The problem of course is that in shortchanging on assistants like this, the odds of failure go up.

People don't multitask well. Having Butler coach OLBs as well as have whatever say on defense as DC he's going to have (and since Tomlin is calling defensive shots, HIS mind is split as well) means things will get missed.
