Maybe I’m not understanding something. The D is a dumpster fire at times so let’s distract Butler further by making him have to coach the OLBs in addition to coordinating the defense?! Or is Tomlin just going to be the de facto DC and Butler will get a DC salary to coach OLB while pretending to run the defense?

Maybe this is in reality no big deal, but I REALLY hate this team right now.

I believe Butler made his mark with as linebacker coach.

To your point it might not be a big deal.

If you are adding new assistants, then maybe the division of coaching labor will be unorthodox to account for the “added” bandwidth to the staff.

The philosophy needs to change. It will still be a dumpster fire.

Let Butler coach the OLB's and bring in Gregg Williams to coach the entire defense

Is Rooney too fucking cheap to hire more coaches and expand the staff?

Or is Tomlin just too fucking stubborn to bring in more people?

Or both?

Maybe this is unofficially making Tomlin the DC and demoting Butler to LBs coach.

Or maybe it really is true that Tomlin runs the bulk of the defense, and Butler does have the bandwidth to go back to coaching linebackers.

Essentially a demotion in everything but title and pay.

I believe the latter scenario is the most likely. As soon as I read the news, I just assumed Tomlin would be calling the defense.

Haha so if Tomlin is becoming the DC (or is already the de facto DC), who is going to handle all of the in game fuck ups that Tomlin was kicking ass at? Are they just going to stare at each other on the sideline when it’s time to call a TO or challenge a questionable call?

How is this going to help our woes at all?

What is Russ Grimm doing these days? The Steelers may need him if MM becomes the OC in Denver.

Let him call the TO's. :D

Tomlin and Teryl Austin coach the D, Butler handles the LB. when it fails, Tomlin falls on his own sword and gets fired.

I think you nailed it SP especially where you wrote "when it fails". Because it will.

Butler role reduced without making him look bad by making it official. Because we can't do things like let coaches go unless their contracts are up.

Tomlin/austin Defense though butler will maintain some role in game planning, is my guess.

Cowher surrounded himself with good coaching generals...,tomlin surrounds himself with friends and losers.

Austin is a western pa guy too, no?

Team is regressing rapidly.

Wait...didn’t Austin get fired as Bungles’ DC because his unit became the first in NFL history to surrender 500+ yards in three straight games?

Great hire!

Kevin Greene is available and wanted to coach here..but let’s practice “coaching flexibility” instead.

Did they fire Bradley?
I had a good laugh with this post 43. You/We know Tomlin is far too pompous and arrogant to identify his own flaws already. This is just mikey-boy flexing his coaching muscles letting the NFL know he's got this. No need for a QB coach. No need for an OLB coach. Tomlin's got this.

Did Austin coach with Bradley? But now it's seems like what we all knew that Tomlin has a big say in the defense. So it really on him and Butlerv just a puppet

The idea that Tomlin gets fired if they have a poor season is one I just don't get.

Do you guys really think Art is going to fire a coach and pay them when he could just wait one more season for his contract to expire?

You're right 43. This team won't fire an assistant, only 'not renew' contracts or silently demote. They're not firing the hc.
