States will be able to pass their own sports betting laws and tax the wagering. Let the free for all begin. Everyone wants a piece of the action.

I expect a giant influx of income into the Pittsburgh area in January as yinzers almost universally bet against a Mike Tomlin led Steelers team against a vastly inferior opponent.

I am torn.

In a free country people have a right to be stupid.

However in a free country people also should have the right not to be forced to bail out stupidity.

The next step is that state governments are going to pick the winners in this.

The people who really care about this have been gambling online for years. This won't have much of an impact on anything.

The more states that get into it dilutes the tax take. It may not be that big of a windfall for each state.

Cuban says the value of sports teams just doubled with betting.

How long before Jerrah installs a casino at AT&T Stadium?

Not that Texas wouldn't approve of such a measure, but I'd say a bribe of $600K might do the trick.

I think Cuban and the owners are under the false impression they can control this the way they control their teams. But maybe he's right if its an extension of their local monopoly.

I would hope that local governments are not stupid enough to make billionaires twice as rich as they are but that would be a mistake in underestimating the stupidity of governments that build stadiums for these assholes.

I don't see how the major sports leagues are going to be involved with the profitability of sports gambling without causing major problems. If the Pittsburgh Steelers are favored by 14 are up 27 then give up two late TDs, the point shaving accusations will go through the roof. Even if it was just dumb luck or Tomlin being Tomlin.

The money has to be kept by a credible neutral third party bound by a number of clear disclosures to avoid influence or the appearance of conflict of interest.

Means nothing. Mark Cuban says a lot of dumb things. He's a used car salesman master of spin and overrated as an owner.

He'd probably be fun to hang out and have a beer with though.

Lets hope it is not a race to the bottom like it normally is. Some state will make almost zero regulations so all the sports books will go there.

If the ban is overturned, then you're going to determine if there is a single, NFL-wide system for betting ... or if each franchise goes its own way. Again, this will be highly contentious for revenue sharing (we can both guess with some degree of likelihood that Jerry Jones isn't going to want to share). Then there are the players and how the monies from gambling will be distributed ... but, remember the players are banned from gambling themselves, so it becomes a bit of a weird situation where their salaries are paid with monies they cannot actually create.

And, as I said earlier, this completely ignores the likelihood that the NFL will screw up the data security piece of this. See Panera Bread for ways large corporations don't understand simple security concepts.

Is it a doomsday scenario? No. But we would be kidding ourselves if we think it will be as simple as "oh, look, here's an app to make a prop bet in the stadium!"

There's a reason for escrow companies when you buy a house. If you give the deposit to the broker he has a conflict of interest and can become reckless with diligence.

I don't think the teams or the league can be trusted with the money. Put it this way, I know they can't after Spygate. And even if they can there will statistically be enough weird situations that they will be deluged with point shaving allegations.

This is a situation that needs to be thought through but won't.

If the leagues are not careful, this could be Black Sox to the twentieth power.

And fuck Mark Cuban, BTW.

How long until Jerr puts a casino in AT&T stadium? How much of that revenue will he share? My bet is zero. The NFLPA is going to freak out in 2020 with all of this "revenue" that they have no access to. This will be more of a Pandoria's box

Honest question - I know that the NFL is able to charge sports bars an arm & a leg for Sunday Ticket (See here). Would the NFL (or any league) be able to jack up the rates for games at casinos that allow sports betting?

I don't know if that matters because most gamblers will punch their ticket and watch it at home. You won't need to physically walk into a casino.

the only increased revenue to the league will be in the TV numbers, but I wonder how much of this alleged new audience is already betting on games anyway.

It's not bad for the league, but it's not doubling the value of franchises. And if they play it wrong they could destroy themselves.

Also wonder if the Costa Rica casinos will be back in business.

New Jersey is starting sports betting on May 28 at Monmouth Park Racetrack. Four other states will be out of the gate quickly. The flood is starting. NFL will be forced to go to full time refs and use more replay. Bettors will go ballistic over a bad call that could change a game. What about the new helmet rule. That will open up a can of worms. More time will be spent on replay slowing down the game further.

I agree.

People want to watch competition, not endless verbal conflicts. Might as well turn on Judge Judy.

They have to be VERY careful how they handle this.

Pa is charging a 10M upfront fee and 34% of betting revenue. Other states charge 10% and under. Pa isn't going to get sports betting anytime soon.

Looks like the sage wisdom that brought us State Stores is in effect for gambling.
