This article is the first MSM article I have read on the shift to safeties aside from Scunges post in ILB thread. His Camp B take seems to be spot on, and I suspect the flood gates will start opening on the talk and stories of the new safety platoon being created on D and is this a new Steelers defensive philosophy. It seems like a pretty big change in direction if it pans out as describe by Scunge in various posts or as in the linked to article from the Tribune.

http://triblive.com/sports/columnists/timbenz/13647569-74/tim-benz-steelers-have-revamped-views-of-defense-before

I am buying that it is a big change and I think it will be a success. I thought they needed a major shakeup on D and coaching changes seemed to be lacking in my opinion. This change in philosophy is a sizable gamble and am anxious to see how it works. Can a safety platoon stop runs in throwing situations? Can they shut down the nemesis TE on dime packages? How often will this safety heavy defense be deployed and will they be successful in obvious run scenarios when subbing has been denied?

Are you trying to say there is 0.0 chance of a Safety defending Gronk?

I think the Steelers have probably two guys on their current roster that MIGHT be physically able to cover Gronkowski decently.

1. Brian Allen
2. Matthew Thomas

Of course, B2B, that might be two options more than most teams have when facing Gronk.

All I know is that I love the direction of the defense, the trend of adding players that are at least physically, athletically more imposing.

In the past where Brian Allen is on the depth chart, normally that would be occupied by an Anthony Madison or a Chidi Iwouma. Players that were strictly special teamers with no upside whatsoever in terms of actually playing defense.

At the very least this season, our special teams are going to be dangerous. Danny Smith has an abundance of faster, more athletic players for special teams. This used to be a great recipe in the past for us, we would draft raw defensive players with talent and then let them dominate on special teams until they were ready to become starters on defense. You look at how Kiesel did it. But for some reason we kind of got away from that and started to settle for average athletes at the bottom of the roster that were never going to be anything more than a special teamer.

We have got to come up with a better name for 'sub package defense'!! Any ideas?

Of course, if we don't deploy them, they don't matter.

here's to another season with Matakevich and LJ Fort being the ILB backups and Sean Davis trying to cover Gronk.

Let's not forget Sean Spence, unless you've got him penciled to start.
