Jonathan Hankins is still sitting out there.
He’s a capable run stuffer

Cory James (Mentored by current Steelers LB coach Joey Porter while at Colorado St.) was out most of last year with a knee injury. Spent time as an ILB in the Raiders defense. With the Raiders signing Tahir Whitehead and Derrick Johnson, James has become the odd man out released with a failed physical. Drafted in the 6th RND 2016, at just 24 years old from Colorado State he could be an under the radar 'cheap' FA signing for the Steelers. Had 56 tackles last season before injury.

PRO DAY RESULTS
6'1 235
40-yard dash: 4.59 seconds
Vertical: 35 inches
Broad jump: 10 feet, 7 inches
Short shuttle: 4.5 seconds
3-cone: 6.65 seconds
Bench: 16 reps of 225 pounds

Another year of watching Bud Dupree get pancaked by the ball boy.
I don't know how much he has left in the tank, but I'd sign Derrick Johnson.
His leadership alone makes him worth a look.

Dupree was playing with one arm. Hargrave and Tuiit also had problems. The Steelers FO apparently agreed with me that safety was the biggest issue we had last year and that the draft's ILB prospects largely sucked, especially as Macks.

We're not deep at Mack, and I'm not sure who of this cast can play FS... but we're much better off that we have been at any point of the post-Shazier era.

Truly a shame Shazier got hurt. Man worked so hard and was a legit DPOY candidate (compare the defense with Shazier to the defense without -- he made game changing splash plays weekly and covered a multitude of sins in the short-to-intermediate passing game).

Mentored by Porter is that a good or bad thing

It’s not something to highlight on the resume.

Tough to say. Just pointing out the college connection there. This fits the Steelers description of cheap vet FA. STFA with a Steelers connection. Can James play? I have no idea. I have not followed his career. Still relatively young in his career it wouldn't hurt to bring him in for a look. Perhaps he would be eligible to attend rookie training camp?

Actually upon further review, doesn't really make sense to sign a veteran even if 'cheap'. They're still in cap hell. Even after the Wilcox release they'll be in cap debut and have to eventually create some cap space for the rookie class, practice squad and the season. https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2 ... ews-update

Yeah, Steelafan77, I agree not really much left money to play with in terms of free agency.

Even when they give Boswell his official new contract it will probably only free up some $500,000 or less. He is working on a $2.91 million tender, but if he signs say a 4 year $18 million deal with a $6 million signing bonus he probably ends up with a $2.5 million first year cap hit.

That is one of the other reasons why I think Landry Jones might not make the roster if Rudolph shows he is advanced for a rookie. Jones if cut would save $1.9 million.

Coty Sensabaugh would save $1.4 million. You add up those 3 players and that frees up maybe $3.7 million. Throw in a Bey and you can get that total to $4.9 million.

Now, yeah, people always say they will restructure some player and free up money but they have really gone to that well already this offseason, who is left? They restructured Tuitt and Big Al and Antonio Brown, some players have been done too many times and there is not enough years left on their contract to continue to do so, like a Marcus Gilbert for example or a Cam Heyward. There are limits, you can't just restructure and restructure and restructure a player over and over again.

I don't think Bell gets that new contract, so he plays under that high franchise tag of $14.544 million. I don't think they give Ben an extension until next offseason and maybe that does not happen at all, who knows.

Colbert and Omar have done a wonderful job of doing what they did this offseason, to be able to still land Burnett and Bostic and sign a Berhe with the handicaps of having $22 million allocated to Shazier and Bell? That is some good work.

But, there is not much left to work with and Jones, Sensabaugh and Bey have bullseyes on their backs. There are a couple of hail mary's that they could do, give contract extensions to Vance McDonald and Joe Haden, but it may be too soon to do that maybe they want both players to prove themselves this year.

Yeah let’s see what bostic does. I forgot about Burnett too. I like when they bring in vet FAs on D. Less guys indoctrinated on the old system the better. By my count there are only 4 left.

No doubt Edmonds is a player they would have taken. Per Colbert their process is to put a first round grade on guys up to where they pick. Means they had 28 players they would have chosen. It basically guarantees they always have an option they like.

Only 27 years old. Wonder if the Steelers could be interested. Money will have something to do with it I'm sure.

Not a fit. He is a 2-down player.

I think Kendricks a better option than either Fort or Matakevich. Contract money is the obstacle I see with Kendricks. Rumor is that he wouldn't agree to a pay cut or restructure. Something. Was scheduled to get just over $7.6Mil for the season. Post June cut saves the iggles like almost $6Mil.

Quote:
Now that he's free, Kendricks figures to generate plenty of interest on the open market, perhaps even from the cross-state Steelers, who are still in search of a replacement for Ryan Shazier. The Falcons were a potential trade partner in the offseason of 2017, per Rapoport, but they've since assembled a speedy, three-man linebacker corps of their own. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000 ... -kendricks

Quote:
The athletically gifted Kendricks has had an up-and-down career since being selected in the second round by Philadelphia in 2012. He posted 86 tackles, four sacks, four fumble recoveries and three interceptions in his second season, but he hasn't been able to reach those same statistical heights in the years since as his playing time gradually declined. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/2357 ... low-injury

He's a two down player because Philly always pulled him on 3rd down. He and the defensive coordinator did not get along well...let's just put it that way. But, physically he has traits to be a good coverage LBer.

I would take a very serious look at him. If either Vince or Bostic go down, we are fcked at ILB. Let Kendricks come in and may the best men win the starter roles and go from there.

As things stand today, this probably makes me more nervous than anything else heading into the 2018 season (considering Bostic's injury history)

We really need to shore up ILB by adding 1 more solid player to the mix.

The Raiders have waived CB Senquez Golson, per league source. Short experiment for the former Steeler draft pick. https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/9 ... 6957714432

Believe he was cut as a result of the Raiders trading for Hackenberg from the Jets. I believe the Raiders traded a 2019 7th RND pick for the QB who never played a snap during the 2017 season. I think Golson likely tries to hang around on some team as a backup. This dude needs to hang 'em up IMHO.

No need for OTAs for you, SF. Midseason form. But hey, if you're of the opinion they need to draft a top round pass rusher next year, why not sign this guy up, redshirt him and save the pick, or at least hedge your bets. With that injury, he's not going to be looking at top dollar offers.

See. I failed. I forgot the sarca buut, getting better with every fucking rep I see. :P

That wasn't a back hand to you and your post so much as it was to the clown that came up with wrist circumference ideology as a determining factor when identifying a blue chipper. But if you want to continue your crusade as discussion forum master especially over something as trivial as some random wiseass on a discussion board posting trivial shit to be humorous you may want to look at what you're sacrificing. A real life.

Damn man, Give yourself a break and step away from the keyboard.

I was saying your wrist circumference reference was midseason funny. Maybe should have used sarca myself, sir. Also could have been more general with the pass rusher thing, as several folks, myself included, have mentioned it might be a priority next draft.

Aside from the Dead and Company show getting called for lightning in the middle of a smokin second set Other One, life is just fine in Sunny Delaware, by the way.

No worries, SF. I'm proctoring and grading finals all week, so I'm just bored out of my gourd, All these timing issues will be worked out before the preseason week one game thread 8-)
