I would LOVE to know the explanation for why they kept Wilcox when he couldn't get on the field with the dumpster fire we had at safety.

I suppose it's possible they could still cut Wilcox, and maybe they will when no one wants Mitchell and they bring him back at vet min.

It all makes you want to puke.

Reported that Wilcox will compete for starting S. See how long that lasts. Mitchell keeps floating up. Why I can't understand.

Thought Wilcox had a nose for the ball.
Not sure why he did not get more playtime.
Other than Micthell was a Tomlin guy.

They're supposedly moving Cam Sutton, and don't we still have Davis? Plus Wilcox.

But, yeah, I'd draft a SS in the first 3 rounds, and maybe again in the later rounds. Or look for a bigger corner that's a step slow that can convert.

I remember three plays from Wilcox this last season. An INT, an almost INT, and a play where he almost decapitated himself. Was he that bad?

Willing to give Wilcox a try considering the last two years of Mike Mitchell.

Adding up his HORRIBLE play at safety along with his fucking TERRIBLE shtick as the team tough guy, I believe he has been one of the worst Steelers in recent history.

Cam Sutton and Davis, and Wilcox back there intrigue's me.....

Draft another Safety, but we REALLY need LB's

On another note, thank you Willie Gay, you came back to Pittsburgh and became a great Steeler

You hit it Chip. Steelers are sniffing around Kendricks. See if they can swing the trade.

Maybe they feel our new secondary coach can get Wilcox up to the next level

Marcus Cooper is a free agent. I'd be interested in bringing him in for a look. The Steelers were interested in him in the 2016 season when he was a FA but the Bears scooped him up.

He was pretty good against us in that Chicago game.

Just make sure he has learned to carry the ball over the goal line if he wants to score a touchdown!

He didn't play after the fourth game. Bears had buyers remorse. Another Cooty? Why hasn't he been cut?

Wilcox will count $3.8 million and Sensabaugh $1,61 million against the cap in 2018 as long as they remain on the offseason roster.
By releasing Mitchell, Gay and Golden, the Steelers cleared $6.875 million in salary off the cap. The moves left the Steelers with approximately $7.5 million in cap space to use in free agency and to sign their picks after the NFL Draft in April. http://triblive.com/sports/steelers/134 ... ree-agency
So they've kept Sensabaugh who by the way stunk up the field when asked to spot play for injured Haden. Check! Wilcox couldn't sniff the field even on ST's cause he'd be flagged for something stupid. Although he's getting paid $3Mil that's about average FA market if you look and see the FA safeties who got paid, so far. Check! Cutting Golden makes no sense. Wasn't a great safety but was a great ST'er. So now they've weakened an already very challenged group. Check! One can only hope they're planning something for the secondary. Can't go into the season with Davis [expected to move to FS], Wilcox [has very little experience on the field], Sutton [rumored to be a safety prospect], Dangerfield [gets no respect but just won't go away]. I'm leaning towards a safety FA from somewhere. Where? Oh wait...., Mitchell on the return for vet minimum.

Fuck that Sutton talk converting to Safety. He's straight out of the box better than Burns on the outside! Move the fucking "I'm afraid to tackle" Burn to safety. I was pissed when they didn't continue to get Sutton on the field over Sensabaugh. I thought the kid played very well - better than all but maybe Haden. I'd hate to see a possible shut down corner converted to a safety as I don't think it makes any sense to do so. With that said, I can also understand Tomlin's thinking here. He can't possibly replace his number 1 draft pick in Burns with a 3rd round pick! That wouldn't look good, so moving Sutton to another position saves that conversation.

Yeah, they have about $3.9M to spend in FA after you take out the $5.1M their draft class will cost.
We know that Haden, Burns and Hilton will be on the field most plays. They also want to get Sutton on a bunch and probably want Allen to progress some this year. So, I have to think Sutton and/or Allen have to come into Safety play somehow, right. You know Davis will be on and they probably kept Wilcox so far because he has the best chance to play either Safety position, but will cost little if they decide to cut him ($675K). My guess is if they grab a FA Safety, Wilcox is gone as they would use $3.125M to put towards signing him. The FA Safety market has barely been touched. Lots of options still. Clubs might be staying away from paying big bucks to that market because they feel the draft is really talented and deep (and cheaper) at that position.

So far I’m pleased with our FA signings and trades we’ve made

It should be pointed out that Wilcox is not really inexperienced.

You look at his time with the Cowboys he did start 38 games. In 2014 he started all 16 games, had 3 INTs for 46 yards returned, 5 passes defensed, 1 FF, 2 FR and 81 tackles. When is the last time we had a safety with that type of production?

I guess I am willing to give Wilcox the benefit of the doubt if the Steelers are going to give him a legitimate chance. Last season he went from being a Cowboy in the early part of the year, then being signed to Tampa, almost making it all the way to the opening day roster, only to be traded at the last minute to the Steelers. His brain had to be fried. He left Dallas and was learning Tampa's defense all summer long only to be traded at the start of the season and having to learn yet another defense in Pittsburgh. I don't know too many players that could be successful under those circumstances. People point at Haden but that is not at all the same. Haden did not move between 3 teams in one offseason. He left the Browns and came to Pittsburgh, a much simpler route.

The thing I don't understand is Golden being cut. I am sorry but he is a great special teams player. Can play all the different unit and is very good even in throwing option passes as the up back in punt formations. He was a perfect 2 for 2 for 69 yards passing when he made the audible. These type of players are not really that easy to find in free agency or in the draft. To think that they wanted to cut him to save some money when Coty Sensabaugh is still on the roster and useless and would have provided nearly the same amount of savings? A head scratcher for sure.

Yes Wilcox cap number is out of wack and I don't how Coty made the cut to stay? But I am sure the Steelers have a plan to address the biggest needs. But being a Steeler fan we know our FA period begins a week after the initial start

Tomlin’s got this. He certainly has a plan. He always been known for having forward type thinking when it comes to the roster

I can tell you this: Golden was terrible as a safety last year. Maybe they are going to make some decisions based on who can play and then fill out STs?
