The Steelers will convert most of Villanueva's 2018 earnings, which includes a $3 million roster bonus, into signing bonuses. Villanueva signed a four-year, $24 million contract in July.

Since February, Pittsburgh has restructured four veteran contracts totaling more than $25 million in new cap space. That number will rise to more than $30 million with the imminent release of defensive backs Mike Mitchell and William Gay.

Hope this money is to go after someone, and not clearing space to keep Mitchell

It really doesn't matter. Because you can roll so much money over now, it just makes sense to create the flexibility.

#Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert spoke today with veteran safety Mike Mitchell, source said, and expressed they’re still interested in bringing him back. Mitchell will test the market once release is official, but door remains open. https://twitter.com/TomPelissero/status ... 3212945409

That tells you how excited they are about the safeties in the upcoming draft.

At least where they're picking @ 28. Likely not going to see the 2-3 top rated Safety prospects at 28 and then there's a big drop off till around the mid rounds. Not very likely to find a starter material safety in the mid rounds. While it's not impossible it's more improbable.

I am not very excited about the safeties draft in that I can't see many that could come in and start. Bates I like. Reid fits the bill. I am meh on Harrison. All would be an improvement on Michell but could they start by week 6 and call the signals for the secondary?

Nahhhhh, that's just Tomlin letting his boy know how much he values and trusts him. If it were up to Tomlin, he'd probably give Mitchell a blank check.
