Walker's batting average is slowly but steadily climbing after a difficult start to the season. He's up to .268 now. Sure would like to see more power out of him though.

Some unlikely sources of HRs tonight: Presley, Walker, and Barmes.

It's nice to see the back end of the line-up start to spark up. Barmes has been hitting the ball well since he came back and he was starting to hit okay prior to being benched. Hopefully, the time off will help Pedro get back on track too.

actually, McGehee hit a HR, not Barmes -- 1st of the year for him, FINALLY -- which makes your point even stronger about "unlikely" sources of HR's tonite

Barmes was the mvp tonite -- 3 huge RBIs when the game was still close -- I hope he keeps it up!

Quote:
With Burnett’s five tough-it-out innings — three runs, five hits, eight strikeouts — in the Pirates’ 8-4 win over the first-place Reds last night, his ERA is 3.76. Subtract that St. Louis debacle, and it’s a Cy Young-level 1.89 over the other eight starts.

Quote:
“It’s about this,” Burnett said, motioning to the clubhouse. “These guys are bringing this out of me. When guys are looked up to, they perform better. There are a lot of young guys here, and they’re listening to me ... I love this, I’ll tell you that. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

I’ve believed it from the beginning. Upon meeting Burnett in Bradenton, Fla., this spring, shortly after that errant bunt shattered his eye socket, he had more questions for me than the other way around. He wanted to know about the city, the fans and, above all, the reaction in Pittsburgh last summer to the Pirates’ success.

“Must have been great,” Burnett said then.

Great stuff re: AJ, FC. Thanks for posting that.

Man, what a win! As has been said....at roughly 1/3 of the season, the Buccos are 2 games out, 2 games over .500.

Far from having his best stuff, AJ gutted it out and kept a team that has seemingly found its hitting stroke in the ball game. Hats off as well to Chris Resop out of the pen. And The Hammer is just on fire right now.

The entire lineup, one that looked really weak and shaky on paper--deservedly so--came to play. Everyone was being smart at the plate and having good at bats. But for two great plays made on sharply hit balls by GI Jones, the damage may have been greater than the 8 runs scored. Elvis is in the building and immediately provides a spark. He runs well and with aggression. I love that kid. As has been said, if Casey can get out of his funk, and he seems to have had his best at bats of the season last night, and Barmes can continue his upswing, we will suddenly have some hitting going on at the bottom half of our lineup.

Need a big league outing tonight from Brad Lincoln. Can see it in the eyes of these players. They know what is it at stake here. Just keep on having fun and stay loose.

On a sidebar, it was fantastic to see the outpouring of love and support for our very own JHay, from family and friends in attendance in the town where he is from. He didn't convert with his only pinch-hit at bat, but what a nice ovation he received when he stepped to the plate. I had hoped he would have started last night, but the lineup card put out there by Clint Hurdle was tough to argue with when the results were in.

Any lineup would be helped by Great American Ballpark, which is a nice hitter-friendly park.

But I just really like Pressley, and hope he stays with the big club. Dude seems to just be a spark plug for the lineup. A lot of what went wrong last year went wrong when he got injured.
