And as I've said before, that K-State game was a total defensive dud for that whole Miami team, they had no answer that day for an option QB who could throw, caught them totally off guard. That's simply a terrible game to watch to gauge any Miami defensive player, and yet, there's Spence, making plays. To tell the truth, he was the only Miami defender that had even a CLUE that day, that's how out of touch the defensive game plan was going in.

Hardnosed you have to wonder what a kid like Spence would have looked like with a pool of talent like Bama had surrounding him. In that K-state game he forced fumbles, pressured the backfield/QB numerous times, dropped into coverage well, pursued very well, made big hits on goaline, made tackles that prevented good gains from turning into huge gains and never gave up on a play. Not perfect but Steelers have the foudnation of a great motor, great instincts kid with nice athletic skills to work with.

Best thing about Spence that game was that you could tell he was trying to make the K-State option QB, Collin whatever, quit. He made it count every time he got a lick on him. It was Miami's only chance. K-State QB never quit. K-State rushed for around 300 yards that game and it was all outside zone option stuff, Miami's DE had no clue, weren't prepared for so much option.

I also don't buy his combine results are because he had a injured shoulder and injured hammy or whatever. If he was truly in such bad shape he would have been advised not to take part in the combine and sink his stock. It would have been smarter to let his gametape tell his story.
I will give him this - he looked real good in the 2 minute highlight clip of him but that was ENTIRELY him playing the run. I didn't see a single play of him dropping into coverage and certainly not against a big TE.
To me he looked like a poor man's Bob Sanders. Good in run support but I saw zero evidence he would be good in coverage against any receiver, elite TE or otherwise.
I challenge someone to show me a single clip of Spence in coverage - I haven't seen one. There is literally no way a college LB his size could only do 12 reps of 225 without some sort of injury. To me that's the only explanation, unless he did a lot more but weren't counted because of some technique flaw like not locking them out the whole way.

You're implying the kid is hiding something or lying about injuries. We did draft a kid who lied and was hiding something, but that was 1 round earlier. Spence comes with question marks, but honestly, how can he do less reps at 225lbs than a fairly strong 17 y.o.? You put any of us in the Miami strength and conditioning program for 4 years and we'll all do at least that...(provided we survive...).

He never quit because he played like a team captain.

That's why we drafted Spence...to stop Tim Tebow.

Quote: he and alonzo jackson/bruce davis are "worilds" apart in terms of play Jackson and Davis had healthy Pro Bowl OLB's in front of them... Where was the opportunity? I suppose Worilds is in on ST's, whereas those two clear "busts" were not. I'm not ruling out the possibility that the "light goes on" (or insert your cliche/platitude here), but it seems more unlikely than likely to me, today. I guess we'll see- Worilds doesn't seem to me to be nearly the caliber of player Woodley was- either on Draft day or any other day. They were taken in the same round.

Lamarr Woodley is the best LOLB in the NFL. Very few second round picks are going to achieve something like that. It's a little ridiculous to have that expectation for every second rounder we draft.
