My job has taken a sudden and unexpected turn for the shitty and I'm looking for any help I can get in finding a new one.
I had been writing sports for a daily newspaper in MD for 4 1/2 years when the evil corporation that owns our paper decided to lay off half of the editorial staff. I was set to be laid off, my sports editor saved my job by letting the company move me into the news department at one of the weeklies in our family of newspapers. I hate it. I'm actively looking for jobs in the Pittsburgh area, because I'm sick of living in MD and with a newborn son it would be nice to live less than 5 hours from family members. Unfortunately, there are a lot of jobs that just don't show up online. If anyone has info on anything that would pay more than $25k a year, let me know, because if I stay with this new job I will end up spending almost that much on alcohol. I thought the "journalists are all alcoholics" stereotype was outdated until recently, now I understand.
Anyway, I'm sure the douchebags will ridicule me for making this post... Non-douchebags, let me know if you know/hear about anything that might help me out. It doesn't have to be newspaper- or even writing-related. Right about now anything is looking better than working 50 god-awful hours a week and only getting paid for 40.

Sorry to hear of your situation, Rhino. I'm not sure I can be of any help, but if I hear of anything, I will be sure to let you know. Best wishes to you and your family.

good luck, sounds cliche but its tough out there. Lot of starving journalists right now. Don't be shocked in a generation or two if we don't have newpapers or the 6:00 news anymore. Its all on-line
Hope you catch a break

thanks, guys.
they laid off people who had 25-30 years at the paper during this latest round of cuts. seems they're hoping to move toward community-submitted content so they don't have to worry about paying reporters. at the moment i'm apparently supposed to be writing about stuff i've never covered before in my life, taking pictures and handling customer-service crap for anyone who actually stops in at the office on my own.
the last three weeks in news have been more stressful by far than the 4 1/2 years i spent working in the paper's sports department.

Go back to school and get an RN degree. You can work pretty much anywhere you want and make way more money than you are talking about. But you might get called "bedpan" by douchebags that don't have a clue but you wont care and will laugh while most of them struggle.
