Crosby's eying another comeback.

Quote:
Crosby is back on the ice, recently skating on his own in both Atlanta and Los Angeles as he eyes a second return this season from concussion-related symptoms.

I have mixed emotions about this. It's obviously nice to see that he's feeling better, and the west coast trip to the specialist must have revealed either good news or nothing bad. On the other hand, I'm concerned about a repeat of last time. I completely trust the doctors to do the right thing, but it didn't seem like the hit that Crosby took to cause this latest concussion (Krejci's elbow) was much of a shot (not that I'm saying i'd enjoy it).

I'd love to see him come back with some new-tangled type of hybrid football-hockey helmet with lots more padding to try to minimize the possibilities of future concussions. I know that alone isn't enough to prevent them - shoulder and elbow pads also need to be made out of softer materials, head shots further reduced, Ovechkin permanently suspended ;) ,etc. - but I feel it's only a matter of time before someone gets serious about the helmet they wear on the ice.

Am I wrong in thinking the last bang-up he was involved in was the knee to knee with Kunitz?

I think that was the initial thought, but it was later mentioned that an accidental elbow was more likely the cause? I've seen it more places than just the link below, but it's the best I could find on short notice that still has a video.

Krecji Elbow

Better video:

Sid needs to ditch that shitty Reebok helmet and go with the new Cascade concussion helmet........Bauer has a new one too but Reebok wouldn't like that.

It looked that elbow to the face he took from Krecji was a solid shot to me.

DMan I agree, I have mixed feelings about it as well. I want to see him active and healthy, but not sure I want to see him back in full contact anytime soon. Of course, I'd love that, but I want him to be healthy and want him to rejoin us when he's fully, truly healthy.

I didn't realize that someone had a concussion helmet - it's about time. I'd love to see some of these guys go with full cages, college-style. It's gotta do something to minimize concussions in some places by deflecting some of the force up into the helmet. I realize that goes against the machismo that a lot of these guys have and would do a lot to eliminate fighting, but at this point many of them have played their entire pre-pro careers with full cages or full shields. At some point, player safety has to trump being macho. As some shield proponents are quick to mention, you probably can't find a player who will go out on the ice without a cup to protect his nuts but they have no problem flirting with disaster with their eyes and now brains.

And I agree that it was a decent elbow from Krecji now that I see it again. All I really remembered when I wrote the OP was that it was delivered by Krecji as he was turning around as opposed to checking Crosby, so I didn't think it had much behind it. Based on how Crosby flew back and then later reacted, it must have been a decent shot.

I was talking with somebody the other day in the locker room before one of my beer league games and he said that it is prohibited to wear a cage in the NHL unless it's to protect a current injury. I don't know if that's true or not.
