The NFHS (high school governing body) is pretty strict when it comes to taunting and unsportsmanlike conduct. Every year they seem to emphasize it more and more. I suppose I called it a lot more for celebrating early on. Now, not so much. Unless it is blatant and specifically directed at another team or athlete, I tend to turn a blind eye and let them enjoy their victory. I never get shit for it by other coaches and always get to work post season including a few state championships. Even if I got dinged for being lenient, I think I'd still turn a blind eye on most stuff. I could call almost any celebration something, and I'm not a fan of them. But I think it has to be put into context. A kid doesn't Win a state title everyday, it is hard to do and is the pinnacle of some kids lives. I let them enjoy it unless they act like asses. I'm even more lenient when I do college.

I've not seen any video, but the way it was described on radio locally was that the kid merely ran the final 10 yards to the end zone with his index finger in the air.....a #1 thing

At this year's Rules Interpretation meetings that we HS coaches have to attend with our league refs, it was told to us that any show of such nature would be considered a penalty. So, if the kid did what he said he did, the call was correct. These are the kind of changes that are occurring at the HS level virtually every year.

Well, that picture looks like he did it at the 24, and that defender really isn't that far away. The original article painted a poor picture.
