Lee was the obvious candidate for an arbitration offer. He hit .337 with seven home runs after joining the Pirates at the trade deadline. He missed time when he took a pitch off his left hand, but performed well when healthy. He made $7.25 million last season and, if he accepts arbitration, his salary likely will be slightly higher. The Pirates, who need a starting first baseman, would like Lee to return but will take the draft pick if he does not. I thought this was a good summary of the moves so far -- and it's true that the real impact bat must come from the 1st base position -- as the author points out, If the 1-2-3 guys stay healthy all year, and we add a big bat at 4 this off season, that leaves walker and alvarez at 5 and 6 -- pretty good batting order there if you ask me http://www.piratesprospects.com/2011/11 ... layer.html

1B does look to be where we would get the impact player, if we do at all. I think it's looking less and less likely Lee will re-sign. Sham is doubtful and all reports seem to indicate that Lee simply isn't too hot on staying with the team. Pena doesn't look too bad, but being left-handed kind of leaves Jones odd man out. At 2.4 mill, I'd prefer to keep Jones for depth.

That's a good article, and hits on an interesting point that most of us miss when discussing how the Buccos can improve for next season and moving forward. Lost in the discussions on who they need to sign and/or re-sign as FAs is the fact that the key to this organizations success doesn't lie with Derrek Lee, or Clint Barmes, but rather with the cornerstone players...McCutchen, Walker, Tabata, Alvarez. Can these guys take the next step(s), and become the impact players we all hope they can be? (pitching aside, of course!)
Also, count me in the group that thinks moving Hanrahan is a good idea. I doubt that his trade value will ever be higher. IMO, they can get a quality return by putting him on the block.

It's a damn shame, but you are probably right about Hammer. We'll see. If they do trade him, they'd better damn well get something worthwhile in return. Neal's trades have been a little better lately, but not always so great early on. About mid-range overall.
I just fucking hate always dealing from a position of weakness. But what are ya gonna do.
