The more I think about it, the more I think the team is going to jettison Doumit and Snyder, along with Maholm. That's 18+ million potentially saved from next season's budget.
I'm guessing they give a long look at Jaramillo, and consider they have enough in Pagnozzi and McHenry as backups. And look to the future with the potential bust they have down in the minors.
Doumit carries a nice stick, but is pretty worthless in field and is never not injured. Snyder isn't worth it, despite the fact that I like him. Why spend so much on that position for either of these two guys?

I think they'll offer Lee arbitration too. He'd probably make out better through arbitration than signing a one year deal on the open market. My hunch though is he will pass it up expecting a better opportunity with a winner or a 2 year deal elsewhere. I have a bad feeling he goes to the Brewers next year to take over for Prince Fielder. No way the Bucs pick up Doumit's option. To do it they have to pick up both 2012 and 2013. They won't pick up Snyder's option either but they may attempt to sign him for less. They'll need a vet catcher and $3 million for Snyder sounds about right. I think they are going to shop Hanrahan pretty hard this offseason and that may ultimately be how they fill SS or 1B.

Why spend so much on that position for either of these two guys? They will try to bring any/all of those guys back at cheaper prices than their options would allow. Also, all this talk of Tony Sanchez being a bust is tremendously premature and while I respect your opinion MJG, I expect more from you than to fall into that trap. It's stupid to think Sanchez is going to be a bust because of one poor season. They cannot go into next season with their catchers being any combination of Jaramillo/McKenry/Pagnozzi and expect to score enough runs to win 82 games.

Yeah, that's why I used the term "potential bust". I know it's way too early to tell that about Sanchez. What we've seen so far hasn't been great, but there is time. And believe me, I'm hopeful that he emerges, because we need that.
I agree, I think our offense definitely takes a hit minus Doumit, but what are you gonna do?
I don't know. Catcher a bit of a quandary. We can ill afford to lose ANY offense with the configuration of this team.

That's why you hope Alvarez comes around, McCutchen finally reaches his full potential, Jones has a good year off the bench, and Lee comes back. If all those things are going to happen, catcher doesn't matter. But since they're not, catcher is huge.

The deal with Sanchez I think most Pirates fans have is that he was a reach. Everyone knows he was a reach. Now every negative thing in pre-draft scouting reports is glaring with this kid. You don't take a reach with the fourth overall pick in the draft. You don't take a fucking reliever with a high draft pick when all-star and obvious pick Matt Wieters was there for the taking. Sanchez better be a gold glover who hits at least .250 in the majors. Daniel fucking Moskos better be the best reliever in baseball. We were told Sanchez wasn't going to be able to hit. We were told his defense was above average. From all indications, those areas have declined even further. With the small track record of failure in Huntington's drafts and player development, it's hard to fathom the glaring negatives ever working their way out of Sanchez's repertoire. It's the same shit I've been bitching about for years. It's a fucking joke. Why do the Pirates have Pedro Alvarez fumbling around with his swing and using a swinging technique he thought was a joke? http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11270/1177875-63.stm This organization has no clue. What the hell were they teaching him in the minors?
