I get both sides of the argument. I'd still rather see him be saying "Yeah, I suck right now, I need to face pitches until I get it right." Quote: Despite recently expressing a desire to have third baseman Pedro Alvarez play winter ball in Latin America, Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Monday he would understand and respect a contrary decision.
"We see both perspectives," Huntington said. "One perspective, which is a genuine and a legitimate one, is that he might be better to clear his head, should take a deep breath and come into spring training ready to go. There's the other perspective that it would be good for him to go down and get at-bats and try to salvage what has been a difficult year for him.
"We honestly do see it from both sides." Read more: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11263/11 ... z1YXHRUsa6

Biggest disappointment for the Pirates bar none is Pedro Alvarez. I hope he turns it around. I doubt he does.

If he fails, and it's still too early to pass judgement on that, it's a huge problem. This is the negative of the Nutting/Huntington approach. Draft picks in baseball often don't pan out, no matter how much of a "sure thing" they seem. It's great that the team has commmitted to signing their draft picks and ensuring that they sign, but if they don't pan out, that doesn't mean much. Alvarez is the only legitimate 30+ power type projected bat in the entire organization. You never know who might surprise, but this is the only one that has that on his "potential" sheet. If he fails, or doesn't pan out, either altogether or before we give up on him, it sets us back quite a bit.
I'd prefer to see him chomping at the bit to take as many at bats in as possible, and having to have them hold him back.

I talked about that a little bit on Pirates Gameday tonight. Will talk about it on Gameday and Extra Innings tomorrow as well.
Alvarez will not be going to play winter ball at the start. Huntington wants him to take some time to press the reset button and clear his head.
Alvarez could end up playing at some point though.

Personally I don't think he should play. The guy was mentally beaten by the game this year. He needs to take some time off, bang a few hot latinas, do a shit load of running, and wait until after xmas until he picks up a bat.

Thanks, 43. What you said is confirmed in today's follow-up report in the PPG: Quote: Pedro Alvarez will not play winter ball at the start of the season.
Whether he plays there at all this offseason is to be determined.
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Tuesday the team felt it best to give Alvarez some time off to clear his head after a disappointing season.
"We've talked about it from a number of different angles and we've ultimately decided it's better for Pedro not to start the season in winter ball," Huntington said. "As we talked about it internally, we felt like it's best to just let him press the reset button. Let him get home. Let him get working on his strength and conditioning offseason program."
Huntington said that Alvarez, born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, likely would be welcomed to his native team at any point, if he so chooses.
"But, if he doesn't, we fully expect that he's going to come into spring training ready to go mentally, physically, fundamentally to have a good season next year," Huntington said.
Alvarez described the decision as a "collective" one.
"We all made a decision that right now the best thing will be to get some rest and start working out to get ready for next year," he said. "As of right now, for the beginning part of the winter, I think I need to get my feet under myself and start getting ready for next year to come back in good baseball shape. If the situation presents itself where winter ball might be something later on in the winter, then we'll tackle it from there."
Alvarez said his ability to play later in the season is a "unique opportunity," but said he has not reached a decision.
"It's open," he said. "It's not definitive." Read more: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11264/11 ... z1YbmB0cBS

As a rule I generally do not like Winter Ball. Feels like we've had this debate before.
That said I really don't like it for guys like Pedro who were mentally beaten as was stated so well earlier.

Sham, I don't know if that is a generational thing or not. Maybe.
As for Pedro, I'm with the approach they are taking. The "want to go" is all I wanted to see. I get the shut down idea that they are going with.
