While I can't say I admired his approach, no one can deny the impact he has had on baseball.

You mean by turning it into a bidding war with no regulations and completely destroying the integrity of the sport? Eliminating any sense of balanced competition?

Again, I don't like the way baseball is set up but he played by the rules. I absolutely despise the Yankees, but if you were a NY fan can you not say he did nearly everything in his power to win?

And you really, really have to love the Seinfeld Steinbrenner stuff. George and the calzones cracks me up to this day.

Thats a little naive. He made sure the rules would never change. He used his power to exploit the system (which was perfectly in the rules), then used his power to make sure the exposed structure would never change because it was to his benefit.

RIP George I am a huge Yankee fan and George is the way all owners should be, forget about the $$$ play to win. All these "poor owners" that can't afford to pay guys pocket most of the money paid to them by the "rich owners" George paid his luxury tax w/o whinning because his main interest was world series banners not being nice and keeping it fair. My boys will go back to back for the Boss!

New York owners have a unique situation. They live in a market where they can charge pretty much anything for seating, parking, etc...and they have such a huge population, that they really have no way to avoid a sellout crowd every single game. They also benefit from being in a perfect advertising position. Steinbrenner didnt operate at a loss. If most owners shelled out the kind of money that he had, they would have been operating at a significant loss. You cant comment him for "forgetting about the money". He didnt forget about the money, he just benefited from the best economic location in the country, and every penny he spent tripled itself in worth. Very few people have that situation. There is no economic glass ceiling for a new york team as there is in Pittsburgh, or Kansas City.

I understand all that but I can guarantee no other owner would have shelled out the kind of coin George shelled out even in the same situation financially... Nobody can deny he wanted to win and as fan thats all you can ask for..

As much as anyone, George destroyed my interest in MLB.

(Jerry Jones would like to do the same thing to the NFL.)

If you give Al Davis the Yankees he does it. If you give Mark Cuban the Yankees he does it.

I'll come off as I'm defending the man, but since he obviously plowed your wife or kicked your dog you are insinuating the dude is no worse than Satan (not Miroslav) himself. What could George have done in your eyes to appease you? If he spent less than he did his fan base would have skewered him; spend crazy as he did and he's hated by the rest of MLB.

He wanted to win bad- there is no shame in being passionate
