How the heck did Carter win gold gloves? I can't remember him throwing anyone out with the Mets. Maybe that was just Piazza. Think it was both.

I was at Fenway in the bleachers when Carter hit those two home runs in Game 4 at the 1986 World Series.
Slept on the street overnight in the ticket line with about 20,000 other fans. My group was hugging the stadium on Landsdowne St. It was more fun than the game frankly.
I was not a Mets fan but coming from the NYC metro area, I was pulling for them. It was also hate at first sight for the fucking mutant Red Sox nation.
When I cheered the first HR, nothing happened.
When I cheered the second HR, I got hit in the eye with what I believe was a high-speed oatmeal raison cookie. Couldn't open my eye for a good 20 minutes.
Hurt like a motherfucker but, considering the knobs in those bleachers, I got off easy.
RIP Gary and thank you for the memory.

I hated Gary Carter...HATED HIM! But at the same time I respected the way he played and his passion for the game. Too young, indeed. RIP G.C.

From 1975-1983 Carter ranked in the top 4 of caught stealing percentage in 8 out of 9 years and was top 5 from 1977-1988 in fewest stolen bases allowed except for 1981 and 1983. Carter's gold gloves were well earned. From 1977-1986 the guy was the total package as a baseball player and a complete pain in the ass to play against (which I consider to be the ultimate compliment). After that '86 WS his career started really going downhill though. His last year in NY he was pretty bad so you might be remembering that I suppose.

Thanks, USS, you beat me to the punch and put it better than I would have anyway.
RIP, Gary. Far too young to have left us.
