I was at KDKA radio sales in the 60's, later promoted to local sales manager. Ed Wallis wore corporate underwear, extremely conservative personality, and always, by the book style. I'm sure Gunner didn't have a chance. I had moved on in 1968 to the West Coast.

Not the kind of guy you want in your fox hole, or go have an IC lite with.

That's fucking great, Jack.

To have a shot with the Gunner would have certainly been a lifetime high point, IMO.

When they replayed Bing Crosby's tape of Game 7 of '60 WS, I loved the locker room celebration when the Gunner is just cycling through the players and the Pirate executives. One of the executives told Gunner "we had 'em all the way!" Gino Cimoli stuck out to me as the most jubilant Bucco.

The Gunner was one of a kind!

Yinz, Gino was a great guy and a great story in and of himself.

Agree, The Gunner, like several of his contemporaries, really was unique unto themselves. They brought their distinctive personalities and their homerism to their broadcasts, and I'll tell you what, it's what we loved about them, it made the entire experience of a fan something more.

Damn man, I was going to correct you and say Gino "is" a great guy, but just looked it up and hadn't realized he passed away last year. How did I miss that? RIP Gino.

Yeah, I noticed it, not sure if it ever got posted here.

Agree. RIP, Gino. And Danny Murtaugh. And The Gunner.

I found out why many and I mean many people hated the Gunner...It's not a story I would like to share in a public forum.

It's toxic and it will offend some of the older posters at the board.

Goes way beyond getting drunk and hitting a street sweeper or trying to falsely sue the city.

Yeah, you alluded to this before, FC. I don't know anyone...and I mean anyone...around my circle or anyone I ever read about who knew him or knew of him, that didn't like him. A few folks thought he was a crazy belt snortin' motherfucker most of the time, but other than that...nothing. I don't doubt you have folks who have a different story, just that I've never heard of it before you mentioned it here a little while ago and again now.

Aside from his work in the booth, his closeness to the players, and his charity work, most of it not reported or noticed by the major media, is what I know about the man.

I actually heard the complete story from my dad on the 4th of July.

I will not share it...I have no proof....I will not soil someones memory for no reason.

I actually hold some media guys in high esteem

Jack Fleming
Myron
Bill Hillgrove
Hell I really like Stan Savran

When I close my eyes Jack Fleming and Myron Cope call Steelers games in my mind. I am sure you hear the gunner to this day....Which is awesome.
