That's a big deal.
And surely at 9 million/year, they won't be able to keep Staal.

#1, this is all based on a CBS Sportsline story where they asked 5 other GM's what Crosby's contract might look like.

#2, $9 mil a year is 300k more than what he's been making, it wouldn't be a big deal at all to absorb that.

#3, the only question mark there is the 10 year term. They'd do that to backload the deal in the way other contracts around the league have been backloaded, so that would actually free up money short term. But Shero has said before he's not a fan of backloading and extremely long terms.

I think they're speculating in the 70 mil range.

It may seem like heresy, but I'm really concerned about such a lengthy deal. What's wrong with 5/6 years at that number?

Crosby's not a "player" like Mike Richards and Steve Stamkos -- He's a BRAND -- Like Mario.

9 years is not too long to tie up a brand.

And what happens when your "brand " is sidelined indefinitely because his brains have been scrambled?

You still sell out.

Honestly, the Pens deserve to be raked over the coals in his deal for the way they bungled his diagnosis over the last season and a half. They're lucky he's willing to re-sign at all. They're lucky he's letting them off with only a small raise as he could surely get more elsewhere.

ding ding ding -- winner, winner, chicken dinner!
==============================================

And what happens when your "brand" develops cancer?

And what happens when your "brand" has inoperable back problems and can't bend over to tie his skates?

And what happens when your "brand" has his career cut short from repeated injuries and illnesses?

You know what happens?

You build him a statue in front of the arena where the team plays, and name city streets after him.
