Clint Barmes is hitting .368/.368/.632 since Jordy Mercer was promoted.

And I think Rod's improvement is probably very similar.

This doesn't feel like an Overbay, it feels like Barmes can have an okay season still. You see flashes, you never did with Overbay.

Barajas has also become a pretty nice signing, and at least he's not hurt every week like Doumit was. I think Barmes/Barajas would prove to be much much better FA signings than Diaz/Overpay.

Only issue I had with it was that second year. I wasn't a big fan of the Barajas signing but I was completely wrong on that. I just couldn't get over how poor and heartless he played with the Phillies a few years back. Had I known AJ Burnett would be coming on board I would have been much happier with the Barajas signing. Barajas caught AJ during his career best season. Overbay I was completely against. That signing made absolutely no sense and it played out exactly like I said it would on these boards for all the reasons I said it would.

I think it's probably time to buy at the deadline. Plenty of guys available who could really help this team. http://thisisgettingold.net/2012/06/09/the-time-is-now/I included Youkilis, and I've gone back in forth in my mind about him. Don't think I'd want to give up anything for him. That isn't an exhaustive list by any stretch, just some of the available market.

this current stretch of about 15 games should tell us whether to be more of a buyer or more a seller this season -- Interleague play will be key for us, and the matchups seem in our favor
I would LOVE to be a buyer if we're in position to really win the division

so yeah beating a Cubs team on a big losing streak...the royals.a terrible brewers team..the NL Central in general.
Let's not lose scope here. It's a 162 game season. There will be highs and lows. You have to take ANY deals that sweep you off your feet. Buying or selling.
If the management group thinks good will of a .500 season means more than having a consistently competitive team capable of winning a world series, then they've already lost.

Need a W tonight, and then move on. Every win is important at any point in the season. It won't kill us to drop one now and then, but we need to win these series with some weaker teams, and a sweep once in a while would be sweet as well, and help us gain more ground on the Reds.
I agree with the comments about Barmes and Barajas. I didn't like Barajas either for the reasons mentioned by SP, but he's definitely grown on me. I think he enjoys playing here for Hurdle. Barmes I figured was kind of inevitable, being someone Hurdle was comfortable with and the fact that Cedeno wasn't staying with the club no matter what, and with no clear cut AAA player ready to roll. Both hit far below their mean the first month or so, both have rebounded and are gaining ground on that. My only problem with both is that neither are great defensively, but Barajas makes up for that by calling a good game and he seems to work with the pitchers well. I am liking Barmes more, but Jordy seemed to be better defensively in his short stint with the club. Neither guy is as bad as fucking Overbay or fucking Diaz or fucking McLouth. Jury still out a little bit on McGehee. He had a nice game the other night, but I'd like to see a trend rather than a one shot. Overbay had those occasionally last season too.
