Former Pirate Matty Alou passes away at age 72. He won the batting title with Pittsburgh in 1966 with a .342 average.

Quote:
In a decade dominated by pitching, Alou had a .327 average in five years at Pittsburgh, batting .332 in 1968, .331 with a league-leading 231 hits and 41 doubles in 1969 and making the All-Star team both years.

Rest in peace.

Beat me to it, Jack, was just about to post the link to Matty's obit.

Was a helluva hitter for us in the mid to late 60s. I was not real happy that we traded him, to be honest. We traded him for Nellie Briles and Vic Davallilo. Both of those guys contributed to our 71 championship season, but I would have loved for Matty to have been there with us.

RIP, Matty. Lot of great memories for this young man in the 60s. Matty, Roberto and Willie was a helluva an outfield.

Great post MeanJoe. Matty was just a little before my time so really don't remember seeing him play. I do remember reading that Ted Williams couldn't believe Matty had the success he did with his unorthodox batting style.

Colorful player, great style, played the outfield with his brothers in SF. 72 years from complications of diabetes, take your medicine, watch your diet.
