I wouldn't even call this frugality anymore. It is wastefulness. Giving contracts to veterans that are essentially replacement level players isn't getting value.

I don't disagree.

Absolutely agree.

Enough with the trash heap FA's. Fucking frustrating. NH's track record with these type of FA's is horrid. And consistently so.

Once upon a time, THE NUT made the statement that the team would spend money when they were ready to win or something along those lines. Well, even though they just hit the magic 20 year mark, they have pretty much done that. So Bob Nutting, either PUT THE FUCK UP or SELL THE FUCKING TEAM, you fucking nimrod!

It appears more and more like union appeasement every year.
Just keep the union and Zelig off your back while low balling and raking in guaranteed revenue sharing

Same shit through three regimes - one thing has remained constant

That they accept Starks and hurdle is telling to me

I don't really agree with that. Nutting has been increasing his spending and I think he is doing it genuinely with the goal of improving the team. I just think they are so risk adverse and cautious with how they spend that it limits the upside on their ROI.

There is no way I can ever prove that nutting doesn't give a shit.
I can only watch the same acceptance and hiring of mediocrity and crap.

Perhaps he does care but is incompetent

Gonzo, he pretty admits that he's incompetent, at least in terms of not knowing much about baseball. However, that shouldn't mean that he doesn't know about personnel management and about effectiveness in a role, or maybe he doesn't, I don't know. I'm not sure how much hands on he does in his other businesses, maybe not very much.

Fact is, we don't really know, all we know is the results which remain unsuccessful.

Guys this isn't just some bad luck or a good plan just gone wrong.
This is systemic - we can debate the issues but IMO it is obviously systemic.

And it is well beyond the problems of small market baseball.

Not sure how we can ever judge the difference between risk averse and refusal to spend.

Three regimes, same results - in fact last one has a worse record now then the last two.
THe actions taken to address development are idiotic, the big league team is coached in a foolish manner, and we have the same free agent problems. But ... We stay the course ... Again.

And it's not just bad luck, or small market - most outside analysis over the last several years has viewed pirates mgmt as a laughing stock. The last two collapses aren't bad luck.

I do guess I am pre-supposing that hurdle will return.
