Perception vs. Reality. The Pirates are 22-9 against sub .500 teams. That is the best winning % in all of baseball against teams with losing records. The Reds just lost 2 of 3 to the twinkies.

You can pull out any stat that you like brother ....we should have swept the Twins and you know as well as I do the Reds have a far superior roster and have more wiggle room to operate with. We need to be brooming the shit out of the Cubbies and Stros forthcoming after this road trip.

At least they didn't get blown out, and quite honestly it's an interleague game. Not extremely important. How many times in the past several years has the difference between postseason and no postseason been one game? Every game is important. And personally, I agree with FC. Verlander didn't have his best stuff. He was still damn good, but the Pirates made it much easier for him than it had to be with their utterly timid approach at the plate. If you're going to go down, go down swinging. They didn't. Absolutely agree with the bolded. Drives me absolutely insane to see batters go down looking. I get far more pissed off with that than I do with bunting in the 9th. Protecting the plate seems to mean fuck all to the Bucs, but to be fair, I see it around the league quite a bit. As for today's game, yes disheartening, but it was against arguably the best pitcher in baseball. I'll take 2 out of 3 from Detroit and be happy with it. You should, too, Jeemie. Give it a try. Oh, I am happy...and I feel good about this series against the Phils. I think a four game sweep is quite possible. They won't have to face Lee (who is bound to win a game SOMETIME) and the Phillies field a lineup that is in many ways worse than the Pirates ever fielded in their dark days. The Phillies suck five ways from Tuesday. But I am greedy. Verlander was vulnerable today...and from the first inning sacrifice by JHay onward, the Pirates took it easy on him. Many times, the best pitchers give you their most hittable pitches early in counts, and then try to finish you off with junk or unhittable stuff. You have to jump on them early, and the Pirates didn't. They were taking almost all the early pitches...many of which were there to be raked. I disagree that the Bucs were taking too much early in counts. I went through the game log and when they got fastballs they were mostly swinging. Hitters look for pitches to drive in early counts. They pick one side of the plate and against a pitcher like Verlander and they look fastball. Verlander threw way more breaking balls and changeups than usual today. He pitched them backwards and that was why you saw so many takes. Verlander didn't have his best fastball today and that probably had something to do with more off speed stuff from him. However his command was pretty darn good. He was able to throw his breaking ball over the plate and he wasn't putting his fastball over the heart of the plate. There weren't many pitches there to be raked.

The Pirates have cleaned up pretty well against shitty teams.

The other factor that folks overlook is that we only have 3 lefties on our ENTIRE staff...that is not something you see very often in the show if ever these days.
Gonna get real interesting up in the 215 As far as lefties go, let's look at some division leaders. Yankees have four, White Sox have four, Rangers have three, Nationals have five, Reds have three, Dodgers have three. So I don't think the lack of lefties is really that egregious. If you were to rank those teams in order of best to worst SB% defensively it would go like this. White Sox - 4 LHP Dodgers - 3 LHP Reds - 3 LHP Yankees - 4 LHP Nationals - 5 LHP Rangers - 3 LHP The Arizona Diamondbacks are far and away the best in baseball in regards to holding runner, they have three lefties. I think it's more approach than anything. Burnett has always been bad at holding runners (think we did this before some with him). Rod Barajas has also had some really bad throws, especially recently. In fact, Rod has played in 50 of this teams games and has caught just two guys stealing. McKenry has the other three in just 20 games. His percentage is bad too so it's not all the catchers, but Barajas is partly to blame.

Gonna get real interesting up in the 215 Burnett has 16 stolen bases against him. 0 caught stealing. That's the league worst. The next worst has given up 14 with 3 cs. JMac only has 4 stolen bases against him. 2 caught stealing. Better than the league average.

I don't give a shit about stolen bases and holding runners.
Just get the next hitters out, and stolen bases don't mean anything.
And our pitchers, more often than not, get the next guys out, so let's not try to mess with them by trying to make them better at holding runners.

Unless one of these poasters is a Hurdle, or Searage alias, I don't think you have to worry about any discussions here, changing the pirates pitchers.
