Read this today from Len Pasquarelli: Quote: Just a hunch, but expect the Steelers to take a hard look at Iowa defensive end/linebacker Broderick Binns in the late-middle or late rounds. Binns doesn't have the perfect length for some 3-4 teams, but does possess the twitch and thickness the Pittsburgh scouts like. And the club has been performing some background work on a 2010 DUI charge against Binns http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/story/18303465/draft-tip-sheet-rg3-dissed-colts-for-skins-maybe-notThoughts, draft nerds?

Binns = Loooong arms. Can't find even a scrap of info on his pro day... no shuttle, no 3 cone, no VJ, no broad, no arm length. WTF.
I did learn the Colts are interested in Bernstein, though. Next Bob Sanders?

The numbers say: fairly high risk of bust. If your 3 cone is over 7, you'd better have some explosive power numbers... his are meh. That plus a DUI? UDFA.

UDFA. upshaw, hightower, coples etc. are considered probable 1st rounders with sundial 3-cones. the vertical is nice, bench scares me more than anything else.

Essentially the theory of why 3-4 OLBs are more easily predicted by numbers is: for the most part, there are two ways to get to the QB: speed/cornering OR power. Binns has just shy of what seems to be the magic predictive number for power (weight/speed/explosion)... but he's the third best power guy I've found in this draft. (best is Nick Perry) I would say Upshaw is a better college player than he will be in the NFL... IF he gets drafted as an OLB. I see his numbers and think: DE. Same with Coples. Hightower has the power of a Massaquoi or Frank Alexander, which is to say in the second tier. Since he's not a primary pass rusher that might be enough for his second skill. There are at least two guys as yet undrafted in the Board Mock Draft (through 5 rounds) who are better developmental 3-4 OLB pass rushers by the numbers... one of them I've never seen mentioned here, which is amazing.

Luis Nzegwu Nathan Stupar Tim Fugger
Nzegwu is a mystery. He got shut out vs. Tom Compton, killed Indiana singlehandedly... have no idea... but his numbers are among the best tested for 3-4 OLB indicators in the past 10 years. He's in the elite group in power and either in or near the elite group for speed as well.
Fugger had a lot of production in the best conference. The only mystery is why the hell isn't he more highly regarded? Stupar also a good college player
Stupar might not have a lot of upside but he's had results when given the chance to play. Perhaps he would thrive if focused on being a pass-rush specialist.

Binns has some talent. I watched him quite a bit at Iowa over the past few years. When you have four 7th round picks, you gotta do something with them. They could do worse than taking a stab at Binns as an OLB project.
