DJ isn't really a conventional TE anyway. If he gets cut, its probably over for him. I don't think Haley keeps a FB just to keep a FB. If they have one thats good enough to knock another position player off the roster, they keep one. Otherwise they won't. Don't really recall him using FB much in KC. Thomas Jones handled most of inside zone stuff, Jamaal Charles the outside stuff. From single back sets

Yep, Haley's a single back set guy based on his history. His RBs overwhelmingly saw a majority of their carries come from single back sets in Arizona and Kansas City. The only guy who saw a lot of carries from the I was Thomas Jones, but a majority of his touches were still from the single back. I just don't see the idea of some heavy formation running game coming back to Pittsburgh coming to fruition. Gun to my head, I think Batch or Rainey start next season as the #2 behind Redman and we see a lot of single TE/single RB looks mixed in with what they do with Redman.

At least going off ESPN's split stats for Haley's RBs in '08 and '09. :D

Yeah, I'd say that's true in comparison to the rest of the NFL.

Just with the Steelers under Arians, Mendenhall rarely ran from the I, relatively speaking. It's obviously not a popular formation league wide.

Was Tony Richardson still in KC the last couple seasons?

Just a question...

I tend to agree that Haley's best performing offenses have been single-back offenses that feature 3 WR's, TE and a single-back... When he's has a QB that could handle it, they've been prolific (Dallas, AZ).

When he's had TE's that could run and catch, he's thrown the ball to them. He also usually keeps a bruiser that sees very little time catching the ball but plenty of snaps- could be a FB or a TE. It will be interesting to see if Saunders and Paulson both have a spot anywhere on the roster (even the PS) come September...

In an ideal world you have 5 guys on the field at all times who can catch a ball and run a route with some kind of speed. It's not an ideal world.

Haley was Passing game Cord in Dallas....They had Lou Polite(Woody High)

He had Mike Cox and Tim Castille in 2009-2010
He moved Jackie Battle to FB last season

In Arizona they ran a ton of 3 Wr's sets...He still had Terelle Smith

Kind of getting off topic, but what the hell...

I don't know whether it's Tomlin asserting more power after letting Arians walk, whether it's Haley exerting influence, or a combination of both, but I've been a fan of just about every move they've made so far with the offense:

-- Cut Chris Kemoeatu
-- Gave Ward a pat on the back and a slight shove out the door
-- Moved Willie Colon into guard
-- Resigned Jericho Cotchery
-- Are apparently planning to start the two rookie o-linemen as opposed to more Legursky/Foster and Scott
-- Drafted a player of Chris Rainey's abilities and have a plan for him

I don't know how exactly it's all going to come together and what the final product will look like, but I like the moves so far. Last year I talked about how I thought this team needed a kick in the ass... I think they're getting that, at least on offense. Kaboly tweeted something earlier in the OTAs about the vet offensive linemen standing around by themselves, sort of whispering to each other about what's going on. Good. To hell with complacency. I know this team has had problems up front for several years, but they've underperformed in the area that matters the most = putting points up on the board. That's why Arians is gone and Haley is here. However they end up fixing it, I don't really care, just as long as this team improves its scoring.

I'm a fan of Saunders though. For a rookie UDFA it sure seemed like he was getting quite a few game snaps the longer the season went along. Hopefully the suspension doesn't slow down his progress too much, because he's a pretty talented TE.

I don't know, but my guess is Saunders may not make the team. The suspension sure isn't helping his case.

He'll make the team.
