Willie Colon made it official today: "I've made the transition to left guard. I like it. It's just a matter of learning the verbiage." Interesting indeed. After all of these years of people saying Colon can't play Guard, now he is being slated in at LG. I think this means Adams and Gilbert start at the tackle spots unless Jon Scott beats one of them out. Adams, Colon, Pouncey, Decastro, Gilbert I believe are the best 5.

Colon said Steelers called him right after draft about switch to LG. "My only issue would have been 'don't move me midway through camp.'" Shows you how highly they thought of Mike Adams. He's being penciled in as a starter before he even hits camp. I like it a lot. Colon has enough mobility to pull from LG, and with Decastro at RG they can be very multiple instead of always pulling and running right. Colon pass protecting from LG should be an upgrade as well. Remember, Mike Tice and the Bears though Colon could be a Pro Bowl caliber guard when they tried to sign him last year.

Colon at LG, DeCastro at RG will both pull. Colon: "You should expect both of us pulling. I think we're going to be a lot more balanced."

I like this move and what does this project with Adams, Starks and Gilbert?

"I've made the transition" sounds like it's a permanent move and not something done as an experiment or to get him reps in case of an emergency. If he's working at this transition in May, it's obviously serious.
Huge news if it comes to pass. It's something a lot of us had been wanting to see happen for years, and at least one NFL team thought he could be a guard prior to this when the Chicago Bears offered him $30 million to kick inside for them when Colon was a FA.
Whatever they've done in the past and how they've handled the o-line, throw it out the window. It hasn't been working for a variety of reasons. Go into this offseason with the mindset that you're going to get the best five guys on the field and let them play together and grow together as a unit. I've always felt Colon could make a pretty nasty mauling guard, so if we can make the guard position better by moving him inside and have a capable replacement at right tackle (whether that be keeping Gilbert there, re-signing Starks, coughJonathanScottcough, or Mike Adams), and those moves get the best players out there, do it.

You have to think Haley helped with this happening, right? He probably let Kugler make the final decision, but I have to believe he pushed him in this direction. I expect them to experiment with Adams and Gilbert on both sides. Scott will be given some reps as well, and will probably open the preseason as a starter until Adams can "earn" it.

The Steelers are paying him too much money to bench him so they have to play him somewhere but he can't be counted on to make it through a whole training camp let alone a season healthy. The positive I'm taking from Colon's move to guard is that the Steelers look to be committed to starting the two young, quality OT's in Adams and Gilbert....THAT transition I like A LOT.
