http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/78817 ... unty-rolesQuote: The NFL suspended four players for their roles in the New Orleans Saints' bounty system, including linebacker Jonathan Vilma for the entire 2012 season.
In addition to Vilma, defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove (now with the Green Bay Packers) was suspended eight games, defensive Will Smith four games and linebacker Scott Fujita (now with the Cleveland Browns) three games.

Total over reaction considering the cheating evidence from New England - safety in a contact and brutal sport over ethics - Goodell is just preparing for a concussion driven lawsuit in which he will say he has done everything possible in his power...blah blah blah!

The NFLPA was probably working with Goodswell all the way on this.
Every man for himself.

FC wrote: The NFLPA better not take this lying down I expected Vilma may get 3-4 games The rest 2 games tops That's how Goodell operates. He holds his absolute power over your head to intimidate players into accepting a heavy penalty (which Goodell determines based on how the media blows). Hard to be sympathetic for Vilma and the NFLPA here. All they saw is $$$ signs and completely caved on limiting Goodell's authority. Clearly a "won't happen to me" mentality, and clearly only the Steelers recognized the folly of that perspective. Goodell also now seems to be operating on a "1-strike" policy as a deterrent whereby it's a 3rd or 4th offense if OTHER players/teams have been found guilty of similar. Vilma got a year so if you try the same stunt you're going to get at least a year. You've all been put on notice, so if you violate the policy it's effectively a second transgression on you.

Yeah, I think that's obvious. What will be interesting is if anyone is willing to challenge the anti-trust exemption of the NFL. It won't be the players because of the CBA, but coaches are not party to that. Payton probably will take his medicine and come back to coaching and continue making coin. Williams, however, might have nothing to lose.

Well, I hate to be a contrarian but I think the punishment was appropriate. Given the numerous concussion lawsuits against the NFL, there was really nothing else that could be done other than by making these four players an example. It may not be totally fair (and at most just slightly not fair) but then in life most things are not. If the NFLPA is involved in filign appeals, then the NFL can simply tell the court in the other cases, 'look, we tried to make the game safer but the players objected.'
