i fully expect the coaches to flat-out murder spence on day one of OTAs when they see how small and weak he is. they'll probably just drown him in a mop bucket and then beat colbert to within an inch of his life for drafting him in the third round when they could have used that pick for ta'amu.

This almost made me spit out my coffee.

 happy to help.

I have also seen him play
And I do not understand this assumption that he Can cover NFL top TEs or RBs

When you play a nickel D, you assume the offense wants to pass. Therefore your chief run defender(a 2gap NT) really serves less of a role. When you take out the nose in a 3-4 you essentially have a 4-2 with either the nickel back being a corner or a safety or a slight 4-3 will LB. The giants used the 'Big Nickel' a lot in the playoffs last year, against the Packers(Finley), the 49ers(Davis) and the Pats(Gronk). It aapparently works against these new TE guys...

Patriots tight ends vs. Giants safeties

Will Gronkowski play? He's officially questionable, but most expect him to give it a go. If he can play, expect to see a good helping of the Giants' "Big Nickel" defense—which employs three safeties—to help offset the overwhelming matchup problems Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez create.

Last year, the Giants were in a nickel defense 68% of the time, while in base 4-3 only 22%.

I get the big nickel
I don't know why there is an assumption spence will be good in the proposed role
Farrier was small, smart and slow and he couldn't cover

probably comes from the same place that says he won't be good at it, or if he even should've been the 3rd RD pick

People in this thread act like the Steelers never looked at a LB prospect before. Hell, this community already dubbed Jason Worilds a bust. A guy that can't get on the field behind 2 All Pro's, a converted DE that didn't have an offseason to begin to work on his craft. Because we all know Steeler LB's are at their best year 1.

Because he's versatile and instinctive like an in the box strong safety. Definitely more suited against that offensive personnel grouping than a 2 gap NT. You can mix up your zone coverages and aren't as worried as getting beat deep by a Mike Wallace, but by a TE who is not going to stretch the field as quickly.

Is it possible he was drafted to replace Clark in a year or two? He passes the eyeball test for a safety, and he's faster than Clark.

If this has been brought up...oops, didn't read the thread.

The other side of the coin is... Never liked the pick because the guy has a massive injury history, and since being drafted hasn't shown much when given an opportunity- in training camp or when the starting OLB's went down with injury. I suppose that one could argue the same about James Harrison, but then- where was Harrison drafted again? Woodley sure as shit didn't take too much time to shine, either, did he?

Now, maybe Dick Lebeau isn't preparing Worilds properly, or dooming him to "bad assignments"- but I think it's far more likely the guy just isn't working out as planned. It's OK, just like Lonzo Jackson and other 2nd rounders, his draft position will assure him a minimum of 2 camps even if he sucks the shit out of a camel's ass in terms of his play.

Worilds is entering his 3rd year now. He's shown a few flashes, but let's be honest, we would have liked to see more out of him, especially with the injuries to Harrison and Lamar last year.

He doesn't seem to have the same burst to the edge he had in college. Not sure if that is because he was asked to retain weight to hold up against the run. Either way, he could do better. He has clear room for improvement.

It took Harrison a long time to get to All-Pro levels and hopefully Worilds can get there more quickly.
