Parker accomplished a shitload more though and to try and debate that is outright moronic. If this is a "who I like more" question, than putting Hoge and Foster above Parker is a-okay with me. If this is any kind of serious "greatest RB's in Steeler history" list, since say....1970, then putting Hoge and Foster above Parker tells me one thing: any person that does that never needs to have their head examined or MRI'd. Why? That's self explanatory.

Christ dude, they overcame all of the shit that you just listed and WERE ON THE DOORSTEP WITH VERY LITTLE TIME LEFT. Your 'Hall of Famer' just needs to squeeze his giant choking ass 1 yard forward and the Steelers are headed for the AFC Championship game and a pretty unbelievable upset. He doesn't just get STONEWALLED, the fucking moron FUMBLES? Really? At the Colts' goal line? Right into the arms of a guy that would have most certainly scored had his wife not stabbed him the night before. Right into the arms of a (normally) fast DB and Ben comes up with the luckiest tackle in sports history. You cannot make this shit up and this guy doesn't believe Bettis' fumble was any big deal. SOME FUCKER HAD A HEART ATTACK WHEN IT HAPPENED. I think 90% of us (not IC of course, he's Cool Hand Luke and he knew we had it in the bag ) nearly fucking died when that fat fuck coughed up the ball.

It wasn't just that fumble that makes me think Bettis was a choker. The yr before he fumbled twice against the Jets in the playoff gm then again against NE in the AFCCG. I bet he had more fumbles in his last 2 playoff runs than both regular seasons combined. Bettis let the moments get the better of him plain and simple. It does not diminish his regular season stats but its the thruth guy was not $$$ in post season..

I almost had a heart attack on that fumble it was ten times worse then Sid Bream/Barry Bonds. It was one of the most surreal moments ever for me I can see in slow motion him holding the ball out for a clear shot best part is they didnt even need a TD -- just not to fumble i remember seeing bettis and cowher grab assing about it on the sideline beforehand
Absolute Horror

Bettis absolutely did the worst thing possible on that play.
On a play where all he has to do is hold on to the ball:
1) he did not have the ball wrapped up with both hands 2) he did not have the ball tucked away between his body and his hands/arms/whatever 3) he exposed the ball like a piece of low hanging fruit. 4) he turned his body to squeeze sideways through a small gap, instead of maintaining balance/leverage.
Earlier that season we saw exactly the right way to run the play when he squared up and took on a defender, when Bettis demolished Urlacher. In the Divisional playoff, we saw exactly the wrong way to run the play.
The only things Bettis did correct on that play were: 1) he did not fumble on the handoff 2) he did not fumble in the backfield. 3) he ran towards the correct goalline (he did not Jim Marshal it) 4) he did not trip over his own feet 5) his shoelaces were tied properly
It isn't that Bettis made a mistake on that play. Its that he made a series of mistakes that were completely foreign to the concept of proper rushing technique.
If a mistake is something the size your average hot air balloon, his series of gaffes on that play are Hindenburg sized.

I remember getting up, cheering and high-fiving with my friends after the 4th down stop, while my friend's dad, still firmly seated on the couch, yelled at us all to "sit down and shut up, the game's not over!" And then that happened. A sporting life-lesson.

Bettis needed Ben to win his title. That is what it comes down to.
Bettis was a great leader and good player for this franchise, but he wasn't clutch. As has been mentioned, he'd have his worst moments in the most important spots. Ben is clutch, when Bettis fumbled, Ben was there. Ben's been there and made big plays in spots where Jerome just couldn't. That's why we added another Lombardi a couple of years later.
In a sport where the margin between winning and losing is usually small, clutch is everything.
