Yep, if I were interviewing for highly sought after positions, I'd simply shut my facebook page down for awhile. It's pretty simple to do, and you can turn it back on and not skip a beat.

Have you ever had a Facebook, Applicant?
How long ago did you shut it down, Applicant?
Two weeks ago? Yeah, we're gonna need the password for that.

If they did a search of your name and saw you had a Facebook (it'd still be archived, for a time), you'd be out of a job then.

Edit: Oh, you're saying no to giving the password. I would like to think I'd do the same, but sadly enough, saying "no" is a luxury. If someone needs to put food on their family (thanks, GWB), they might have no choice.

Solution: One facebook profile with real name and a few boring posts/pictures.  When you get friend requests there, redirect them to your alternate account that does not have your real name attached to it.

Or people can just stop being facebook whores. My account consists of about 98% of smacktalking about the NFL with friends. So unless the employer was a ravens fan, it wouldn't matter. I would have a problem with someone going through archived private messages which is essentially like them having your email password. bullshit.

All you have to do is tell them no, as it is an invasion of privacy.

I bet they would still hire a candidate if they were qualified and passed other background tests. I saw a funny ad in a newspaper the other day where the employee said "you can have my password if I can have yours".

To which the interview quickly moved to another question.

Facebook accomplished in five years what the CIA failed to do in 200 because people are such attention whores.
