For those interested in such things, there's a great site called Shorpy.com that posts old-fashioned glass plate photos taken from the 1860's through the 1940's. Photos are from all over, but mostly from the DC area as that's where the webmaster there is from. However, there are quite a few nice Pittsburgh photos as follows:

1900:

1902:
http://www.shorpy.com/node/5485?size=_original (Union Station)

1905:

1908:
http://www.shorpy.com/Wabash-Bridge?size=_original (Wabash Bridge and great view of Downtown)

1910:

http://www.shorpy.com/node/8708?size=_original (Monongahela again)
http://www.shorpy.com/node/9645?size=_original (Sixth Street Bridge)
http://www.shorpy.com/node/8762?size=_original (Farmers Bank)

1912:

1941:

They are amazing photos, thanks Jack for those. But consider they are taken on 8x10 inch dry plate glass negatives, that's quite huge for the fragile dry plate glass for even now!, and appear to be relatively fast exposure times looking at the slight blur of the moving people entering Forbes Field. Months ago I came across (simulated) Russian color photos from the same era, and some have amazing clarity for triple emulsion prints, (3 exposures with a red, green, and blue filters) taken three times consecutively would account for the slight blur when people are the subject on the link.

Here's a sample.

Kind of an ominous look with the ground in clear focus but the moving clouds slightly blurred. Glass negatives were also used, but camera stability while changing filters is kind of amazing.

Another old Pittsburgh photo posted on Shorpy.com today. This one of Wood Street taken from Liberty Ave in 1910:

The latest Pittsburgh offering on Shorpy.com:

1905 - Wabash Station

Demolished in 1954. The Gateway Center now resides there.
