In the spirit of Halloween, I thought I'd ask... What's the scariest movie you've ever watched?
Personally, I don't like the slasher films; Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, etc. However, I do have to say that I like Rob Zombie's version of Halloween. Stephen King makes some doozies.
The ones that get me are the possession flicks.
To this day, IMO, I think that The Exorcist is the scariest movie I've ever seen.

But Reverend Kane gave me nightmares for literally months. Not to mention there was an old, tall skinny guy with white hair that lived up the street and reminded me of him. had to run past his fucking house. So that movie still tops my list.

The only movie that ever really scared me was, oddly, The Ring. The concept was cheesy, but some of the imagery was really creepy and for some reason it just got to me.
Paranormal Activity was another one that came close. Haven't seen 2nd and 3rd.
I tend to like more subtle, make you fear something without being super explicit about what you're fearing. Want to watch Rosemary's Baby, which I've heard great things about. Gladly taking other suggestions.
Slasher films don't really scare me either (I'll jump when they pop out of a box, but that's cheap).

The Evil Dead did it for me back in the 80s. The first and only horror flick that I've ever had to stop watching because I was so freaked out (I was a teenager and home alone at the time - was convinced something was watching me through my kitchen window!). I eventually got back around to it, but I wasn't about to try it again alone in the house.
I haven't seen any of the paranormal activity movies yet, but I think I'd like them.

The only horror movie that ever actually scared me was The Exorcist when I saw it for the first time at age 10.
I love horror movies and have probably seen over 5,000 of them (good, great, and shitty) and to this day that is the only movie I refuse to watch a second time.

Remember the Blair Witch Project? Me and some co-workers got really super high [weed] and went to watch it when it was thriving in the theatres back about 15 years ago. Lets just say it was a long time before I went camping again.

ReigningSteel-
I forgot about Cain from Poltargyst!! Scary ass looking dude! I believe I read that he had cancer during the filming of the second one.
Craig T. Nelson eating the worm then vomiting up a little demon dude was gross and awesome at the same time.
Blair Witch freaked me out for a minute because I actually thought it was real for about a month.
The ending with the dude staring at the wall while the chick was screaming... Little freaky.

I saw Blair witch in the theater on a whim when it first came out. It scared the shit out of me because there was little publicity and i had no idea if it was true or not at the time.

I've been around the block with horror movies my whole life. Starting with my friends and I renting VHS tapes of shitty horror movies like Terror Toons, Camp Blood 2, Carnage Road: The Legend of Quiltface, etc.
Every Sunday this tradition is continued with shitty horror movie days on Netflix
I really don't know if I've ever been afraid of horror movies or scary movies. I've watched so many throughout my life good and bad that I've pretty much seen it all. I think some of the most out there creepy ones come from the Japanese ghost stories.
Imprint is a somewhat disturbing Japanese ghost story that was Americanized and intended for Showtime's Masters of Horror series. It was deemed too graphic and disturbing for the viewers and never released.
Some French movies like Inside are also disturbing. That one involves a crazy woman chasing around a pregnant woman and trying to cut out her baby with scissors.
Typically, the ones that have more of a basis in realism seem to be the scariest, even though I'd say my most enjoyable involve the monsters of the genre: Freddy, Jason. Michael, Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, etc.
Probably my favorite horror movie of all time that is actually a good movie is a horror comedy by the name of "Behind the Mask". It's about a crew of journalism students who follow around a serial killer attempting to become the next Michael Myers/Jason Voorhees/etc. The serial killer is of course a riot and he sets up all of the cliche's of his profession in the slasher genre throughout the movie.
I believe there is again a French version of that movie that is of course twisted and fucked up.
If you want "scary" the Japanese or the French are who you want to talk to.

HJD: Imprint is available on Hulu. Might have to check it out.
