Hate to turn this thread into an alternate direction... I love history and I guess hearing from a different generation certainly gives me perspective and meaning.
But my question is: what makes a President seem revered? Is it his oratory skills/persona? Legislation? Economic growth?
To take a contrarian viewpoint of a Presidential mandate being part of his legacy, you would have to give credit to the House and Senate members too. It's just like the economy: many Presidents had the fortune of being at the right place/right time and you could argue that the Fed Chairman had more of an impact on our economy than the sitting President at that time. In other words, do we give too much credit to one man?
Not attempting to crap all over what was mentioned, just curious about differing opinions on the matter.

Donnie, you are on the right track. I purposely avoided policy specifics to try to keep what is a very borderline thread and discussion rules-wise. It is all those factors, and probably more, and you are right to say we probably attribute too much to one man at times.....I would argue for the opposite when it comes to the 3 on my post-Rushmore list, at least in terms of some critical qualities offered during critical times. Government, particularly of the Democratic form, can be a complicated exercise, with many, many factors playing a role.

I love the time travel and alternate history stuff, and I've been a big fan of Stephen King's stuff since I first read "The Stand" nearly 30 years ago so picking up the book was a no-brainer for me. I won't get into any of the details here, but will tell you that the hardcover edition is 849 pages long, and I tore through it in five days. I listened to the audio book version of 11/22/63 and it is fucking amazing. Such a brilliant and compelling story, and a very different kind of time travel dilemma (every visit is a reset). Quote: On August 12, 2011, well before the novel's release, it was announced that Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) has attached himself to write, produce, and direct a film adaptation of 11/22/63. King will serve as executive producer. Shooting is planned to begin in the fall of 2012. Yes!

Pissed off a lot of people high up and the Kennedys in particular Didn't really give a damn because they felt somewhat untouchable.
One just has to study the facts of Pittsburgh and its steel workers early Unions to see just how easy it is for money to buy killings....
Not really uncommon at all in our history....I believe Many conspiracies have some merit....they often get a few Details wrong....the larger point often remains....the only other President so loved and hated at the same time was Lincoln
Kennedy had he lived would've completely changed American society Prolly the world too....I think he was targeted

Jesse Ventura tackles the JFK Assassination. Anniversary tomorrow. One of the saddest moments in American history.

I've heard many misleading facts and outright lies perpetuated on his show. Ventura deserves as much respect as Donald Trump.

He served our country in the Pacific with distinction and then later on, because his brother Joe had died in Europe, chose to enter public life. We'll never really know how great a President he would have been or even the alternative because of what happened on this date in Dallas 49 years ago. But we know for sure that the United States would never be the same after 11/22/1963. RIP JFK, a Brother Knight of Columbus and fellow New Englander and Navyman.
